“Better than the US” as fans praise Survivor’s double twist

Twist upon twist at Tribal Council gets the thumbs up from stunned Survivor fans.

Australian Survivor fans were kept guessing until the very end as the show unveiled two twists early in its season -including one never featured on the US series.

Two teams were sent to Tribal Council last night, revealing their inner turmoil in front of one another, for host Jonathan LaPaglia.

But in a plot twist, LaPaglia told the two tribes -after they had voted- that the two contestants with the most votes would not be going home -but swapping teams.

After two tied votes, Nick and Conner were forced to swap teams, Vavau and Saanapu.

But LaPaglia kept the surprises coming, telling both they could choose another member to join them, sending Sam and Tegan to new tribes too. By the end, the tribes had completely changed their line-ups with alliances split and truths out in the open.

On social media last night, fans were praising the show’s twists.

  1. What a superb episode! And whilst there has been much said about overkilling with three episodes per week, last night’s has left me gagging for the next one!

  2. Seriously David, you on the payroll ? Have you not seen the ratings ie what the rest of the country thinks of the show .. apart from a few tweeters… 🙂

    1. Have you not seen my ratings reports? Comments below seemed to agree with my observation. You comment conveniently overlooks earlier posts that too many eps risks the brand (and my name is on all my remarks!).

    2. So because it’s not rating that well you don’t think David – on his own blog – should write about it? How ridiculous, he can write about whatever he wants and the articles are getting a lot of comments so clearly it’s appreciated by some of his audience. This is a great show, really high production values, well cast and it is being raved about all over the media, it’s a shame the ratings aren’t better but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t a lot of us enjoying it. Even US TV sites are talking about it and people are watching from there or asking how they can access it, some are even saying that Jonathan is as good as or better than Jeff Probst. Pretty big praise, especially considering how possessive US viewers are about the show.

    3. Ah, I misunderstood. I thought that this was David’s blog where he was free to express his personal opinion, even if that didn’t concur with the view of the sheeple.

I see that I was mistaken. Thanks for clearing that up.

      1. Of course he’s entitled to express his personal opinion.. it’s what he does best!! I thought the comments section was for his audience to express their personal opinions too. And that’s what I was doing.

        1. Seriously TVlover, have you not seen the ratings. Ratings aren’t woeful. In fact, on Tuesday (despite 7’s Willy Wonker promos), Survivor beat the Block and Zumbo in 2/3 demos and came 2nd in the oldest demo.

  3. This has probably been said before, but I wish TV Tonight readers determined the ratings and therefore what was on and not on TV. Seems to be a few Survivor fans here.

  4. Well, that was edge of your seat stuff last night.
    Loved it !
Some of the contestants seem a little bland though but perhaps that’s just because we haven’t gotten to know them yet.
I am already seeing a potential winner, even at this early stage.
But because he’s so strong a contestant he could well have a target on his back later on…

      1. Lee from Aganoa.
Always one or two of his type in the US Survivor – really strong in all the tasks, a born leader and also seemingly fair and honest.
Wonder if he can maintain his integrity as the game progresses?

        1. If this will play out like the US show, I doubt he will win. It just gets too ruthless and he probabily won’t be able to cope.

Also if he does win, that would mean that all winners of Aus Survivor have been a sports guy with 3 letters in his name (the late Rob Dickson – a former AFL player – won 9’s 2002 version and Guy Leach – an Ironman competitor – won 7’s Celebrity version).

  5. I was a little worried that Aussie version was getting bogged down with trying to give character development to 24 contestants in first few episodes..
But last night tops all I’ve seen over the years.. Jonathan LaPaglia is finding his niche nicely..

  6. Twist aside which was excellent, I have to give the show its due about its editing, I’ve been highly critical of it, but the last 2 episodes have been much improved particularly with regard to the pacing and the post-challenge pre-tribal segment.

  7. I never watched an episode of the US version, but am following the Oz version as my husband is. We loved the twist! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

My biggest question is why are there not as many viewers? I thought The Block was tired according to TV Tonight readers and we are over cooking shows for the year.

    1. I think because The Block has been off air for more than a year, which is plenty of time for people to become interested in it again. Although, Block and Survivor were the closest they’ve ever been last night

  8. I am a Survivor devotee but this just draws out an already drawn out show that has suffered from too many characters from the start. I am waiting for the intruders next.
