Big Music Quiz pips The Block

Ratings: Early chart success for Seven's new family entertainment show, but Australian Survivor hits a bum note.

2016-08-29_0951

Seven’s new music quiz show has proven to be an early chart success, winning its timeslot with 1.21m viewers. While the family entertainment show polarised social media feedback, it was enough to defeat The Block (1.15m) and Australian Survivor (662,000).

While The Block increased on its numbers from last Sunday, Survivor went in the other direction. Both BMQ and Survivor are produced by Endemol Shine.

60 Minutes managed to beat Sunday Night despite a later start while Seven News won the 6pm battle.

Nine ranked first in primary channels but Seven network won the night with 32.6% then Nine 29.1%, ABC 16.5%, TEN 15.4% and SBS 6.4%.

Seven News was #1 with 1.37m for Seven then The Big Music Quiz (1.21m) and Sunday Night (838,000). Criminal Minds pulled 481,000 / 340,000.

Nine News (1.23m) led for Nine followed by The Block (1.15m) and 60 Minutes (879,000). Nine later had differing movies Non Stop (164,000 in 2 cities) and The Wolf of Wall Street (113,000 in 3 cities).

ABC News (753,000), Vera (696,000), Grand Designs NZ (653,000) and Compass (273,000) comprised ABC’s night.

Australian Survivor (662,000) led for TEN. Modern Family was 338,000 / 270,000, Movie: The Maze Runner drew 286,000 and TEN Eyewitness News was 274,000.

The Real Noah’s Ark (291,000) led for SBS then Shakespeare’s Tomb (239,000), SBS World News (173,000), and The Secret World of Isis (162,000).

ABC2’s Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (230,000) ruled all of multichannel land.

OzTAM Overnights: Sunday 28 August 2016.

  1. watched the big music quiz last night not a bad concept but thought the audience dancing was annoying and over the top and the constant score updates were starting to get annoying the guys on the bikes was very spicks and specks i got all the 80’s questions right i didnt know any of the modern music questions (showing my age a bit there lol) not sure if i will tune in again next week

  2. Look, agree that TBMQ was lacked a bit of content and was full of ads, but i think its a nice new light show that fits well on a Sunday Night as is very different to what has been on the last couple of weeks!
Channel 10 need to do something about Survivors timeslot if they want it to succeed. Not sure why everyone is so up in the airs about the block, same old same old to me and possibly even more melodramatic! Sunday Night was good, mostly due to Chris Bath! I look forward to A Current Affairs take down on 10 when it screens that horrible Michael Turnbull attack report tonight…..Not! Now if there is one show that needs to go it has to be Tracy & Co! Thanks Again David

  3. I am not a fan of much reality TV….TBMQ did not impress ..just watching the promo’s…
No live TV for me last night…I was trying to catch up on shows on Iview….and will watch Vera sometime during the week…..

  4. IMO they r probably dumming this show down because they want to get a lot more people able to watch and participate. The show has potential as something Family Friendly but lets itself down by having all similar phrased questions. There needs to be some differences even if its for a few segments. The celebrity contestant bit is fun it gets people interested in it cause they are curios as to how much their fav celeb knows about Music.

  5. Ten seems to be making the same mistake with Australian Survivor that Seven made a few years back with their revival of The Mole. Most people have lives outside of TV and committing to 3 nights a week is too much, particularly for the target market of under 55s.

The Big Music Quiz was cringe-worthy. When did blatant cheating and making one question worth 97 points become entertainment? I won’t be back for more next week.

  6. As a music nerd I had high hopes for TBMQ but it was awful. The stupid dance party and score update after every question ruined the flow. And why were contestants allowed to cheat? That and the fact that basically every question was “Name the Artist” made for a really big letdown. The potential is there. I just hope they fix it.

  7. Too many score checks on The Music Quiz. Started off great – then went down – then too much over the top dancing etc – would be great on a Friday or Saturday night… Found myself yelling all the 80’s answers though!

  8. That was a strong ep of Survivor. The only issue I had is that they should have done one challenge (combined reward/immunity) but everything else was awesome.

  9. On a positive note, the Sunday night story last night on the Australian survivor of the Nice terrorist attack and the Frenchman Patrick who stayed by her side through the whole ordeal, was outstanding.

  10. Channel 7 could put on a test pattern and get 700k viewers.

So instead of spending on quality, they put this sort of crap on.

And then complain that audiences are shrinking. It’s mainly boomers now watching FTA…

  11. Any idea why there was different movies in different cities on Nine last night? I really hope that doesn’t mean Tasmania (we get Nine Melbourne’s feed these days) misses out on an episode of Unforgettable.

    1. I agree, I like Unforgettable. I also wonder about Motive on Southern Cross. I am pretty eagle eyed about looking for it on the EPG on Sunday nights, and we seem to have missed two episodes.

        1. Thanks DK. My issue is I’m not sure which ep it is. Unforgettable was on in 2 states after Non-Stop last night but wasn’t on in the states that aired Wolf of Wall Street as that didn’t finish until 1am, so Nine moved straight on into Constantine. Hopefully it means we are just an ep behind instead of skipping it.

  12. I was expecting Music Quiz to be a big Sunday night bomb like Let Loose Live, it just looked like a cheap nasty filler program from the commercials, trying to promote Channel 7 cast members and bring some other people back into the spotlight ala Dancing with the Stars.

  13. Survivor is far too chunky for my liking. There are far too many contestants to get to know, and this is only going to make the show drag until we get to the merge. Shorter, sharper episodes would have been better suited to this first half of the season, and 3 episodes a week is overkill for a once-per-week format.

    1. Agree about Survivor. Three eps in and still don’t know a thing about a lot of the contestants.
Yes, 3 episodes a week is too much and also too much of a viewer commitment when there are so many other competing shows to watch at the moment.
Not a fan of Jonathan as host. Far too angry and aggressive – his constant yelling at teams during challenges comes across as berating rather than encouraging instructions. Doctor Chris would have made a great host.
      Still,am quite enjoying watching.

        1. Jonny Lapaglia is doing a great job. He is not berating the contestants, the bloke in the US does the same style commentary…..the giveaway in these early eps is that they have given a fair amount of screen time to the person who ultimately gets booted at TC….same thing happened last night and the 1st 2 eps…..still good tv though

          1. Yeah I said last week that the editing of the 2nd episode (post-challenge) really lacked subtlety, that they got too excited about having a blindside and overdid it…after last night I’ve got to retract, because compared to last night it was incredibly subtle. Seriously did anybody not know who was going home last night 20mins from the end? Could they have crammed any more confessionals for the boot into last night particularly the last 30mins? I’m starting to seriously wonder whether anybody in the editing booth, the producers or the network has even seen Survivor, let alone understand what the central editing purpose post-challenge is meant to be.

I traditionally avoid Australian reality shows…is this sledgehammer way of editing the norm?

      1. I haven’t warmed to Lapaglia either. I think you’re right, he is aggressive and it felt like he was pushing too hard for information and tribal council, which isn’t necessary from my point of view.

        1. I hear what you are saying folks, but in the US version the host stirs the pot big time at TC and also does a running commentary during the challenges…that’s the show

          1. jezza I think the difference between Lapaglia and Probst is the way Probst asks just enough questions at TC to let them know they know what’s going on and more importantly let the contestants not in the know so to speak, realise they are missing something and that was more what I was referring to. Probst creates uncertainty, whereas it feels like Lapaglia wants to get to the bottom of what’s going on. It’s different styles and Lapaglia is probably also trying to make his mark on the show, which is understandable.

  14. Tens strategy of starting their reality shows at 7.30pm is very noble but l feel they are shooting themselves staying with this. Surely they must now realise this not working and coming from a low base contributes to their poor ratings.

  15. I watched about 15 min of The Big Music Quiz. It wasn’t horrible but there was way too much time spent filming the audience “spontaneously” dancing after every… single… question. Like so many shows these days it was very light on for actual content. I won’t be back.

And Ten have again shot themselves in the foot with their scheduling of Survivor. They got some ok numbers for the premiere and then they try to ring as much out of it as they possibly can by padding out each ep with nothing and then adding another one during the week along with multiple repeats in last-minute TBA slots. It’s like the people who make these decisions are completely unaware of what has happened every single time this has been done previously.

Clearly Ten “haven’t been paying attention”.

    1. Agree about The Big Music Quiz.
Trying too hard and too much hysterical yelling. The unnecessary dancing and OTT celebrations after each question became grating very quickly.
      Certainly no Spicks and Specks.
Cut it down to half an hour and better suited to

      1. I agree Angela. Watched TBMQ on my +7 app & found out that people screaming out loud. It really made me want to switch off the show.
IMO, this show will go down even further.

  16. I do think that almost 2 hours of survivor is stretching it… And a tighter episode would be beneficial… However it still baffles me how a top quality, faithful, bold, entertaining move such as Ten’s decision to try Survivor has been met with such lacklustre viewing numbers… Compared to the umpteenth series of the Block and that half baked music thing on Seven… Oh and the half baked (pun absolutely intended) Zumbo, It’s depressing… No wonder the risks in TV are dwindling… Survivor is fantastic imo!

    1. We’ll see about Zumbo. Hopefully everyone has seen through the copying of other ideas and how unnecessarily overhyped the delivery of the show is…and it follows last week’s 30% decline (by Wednesday last week).

  17. I’m one of the people who started watching Survivor with great enthusiasm but am already drifting away from it. For the 2nd episode in a row I felt like next to nothing happening in the first 30 minutes. I then checked the EPG to see what time the episode was due to finish and it was set for 9:17. I flicked the channel at that point. No way was I willing to watch an almost 2 hour episode of the show, followed by another 2 episodes this week which will probably be almost as long. Ten have only themselves to blame for this. Two episodes a week they could probably get away with since they have extra contestants but the episodes should have stayed tight 1 hour episodes like the US version, not these bloated, boring 100+ min episodes.

    1. That’s the reason I can’t commit to watching it, I wanted to out of curiosity, but I can’t devote up to 5 hours a week to watching one TV show I’m not crazy about. One or two 1 hour shows a week would have been perfect.

I think this is a problem with all Australian TV networks and their reality shows. They spend so much on them that other programming suffers and they have to show their formats multiple nights simply because there’s not much else around to fill the programming gaps that is going to rate. It’s leaving me (and I’m sure I’m not alone) bored with FTA TV on the whole.

    2. I did the same thing last night, watched the first segment and thought to myself this storyline is dragging on, so I checked when the episode was supposed to finish, which was well after 9pm, so decided to change channels. It’s bad enough that 10 are showing more than one episode a week, but to then stretch out a 1 hour episode to nearly 2 hours, i’m done! I now hope this show fails. Can’t wait for the US version to come back, they know how to keep episodes tight and to the point and at just once a week you really look forward to Thursday night…

    3. Reneged on my original intention of just giving Survivor the flick and watched, but it is just inexplicable on the part of production (regardless of how sloppily edited the show is) to slot in a separate reward challenge this early on when you’ve still got more than 20 contestants.

I’ve no idea whether it is 10 or the production company that is driving episode length but when will Australian networks learn that bloated episodes may work for their stripped rubbish, but it doesn’t lend itself to these competition formats.

      1. Traditionally every Survivor episode has a reward and immunity challenge in a 1hr ep. Anything other than this is a variation (sometimes employed by the US show). So I support a reward challenge as these events drive the conflict and in an episode of nearly 2hrs thank god we had a reward challenge.

  18. Big Music Quiz – I recorded it and watched it later. Have to say, it felt way over the top in terms of the enthusiasm of the audience and contestants and what was actually happening in terms of points etc… Just too enthusiastic – like they were on drugs!!

Survivor – a shame to see it not getting viewers, I think Ten are doing a really good job with it. But at the end of the day, look at what the lead in is getting – when the other programs are starting at 7pm, leaving Survivor til 7:30pm is a bad move, especially when it’s preceeded by Modern Family, which is bombing in the numbers…

  19. The big music quiz was fun. Didn’t understand how the scores went as it was never explained. I thought this episode was not the first one recorded as Darren kept on using phrases like “as usual”.
