Seven yesterday confirmed an ‘expanding’ role for Melissa Doyle on Sunday Night.

She will be taking on a full time role as host and senior correspondent from August 28.

Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs Craig McPherson said: “This is a major appointment for Sunday Night and for Mel. It allows her to give 100 per cent commitment and time to Sunday Night as it continues to grow as Australia’s number one public affairs program. With the experienced team behind her, this will be an exciting new horizon for Mel and I’m sure she will excel.”

Executive Producer Hamish Thomson added: “Melissa has been a huge part of the success of Sunday Night over the past year and we are thrilled to have her join us full time. Mel is an outstanding journalist and interviewer with more than 25 years’ experience and the move will further strengthen the program.”

On Instagram Melissa Doyle said, “I’m so glad we can finally announce this next exciting new chapter. I’m moving to a full time role on our networks flagship public affairs program @sundaynighton7. It’s the ultimate privilege for any journalist – to tell interesting stories, take you to fascinating places and introduce you to extraordinary people. The opportunity to do so on such a well produced and respected program is an honour.”

Meanwhile McPherson has told the Daily Telegraph Mark Ferguson as weeknight anchor on Seven News Sydney “has got the job for as long as he wants it.”

I hope Channel 7 will now give it a permanent time slot, instead of moving it around (and often taking it off air) whenever something special comes along.
