Veteran TV executive Ian Johnson has parted ways with the Seven Network, after 13 years.

Johnson exited on the same day as David Leckie. Industry chatter suggests his contract was not renewed. Seven advised his consultancy ended in June.

Johnson is legendary in Melbourne media. He joined Seven as managing director of HSV7 in 2003, with 5 years in the role before being succeeded by Peter Lewis, and becoming Chairman of Channel Seven Melbourne.

Prior to Seven he ran GTV9 for many years, where he was instrumental in kicking off The Footy Show and bringing Eddie McGuire to Nine. He also ran Nine in Sydney for 12 months after David Leckie departed before a new CEO was appointed.

At Seven he worked closely with Kerry Stokes to secure the AFL for Seven and brought Daryl Somers across from Nine for Dancing with the Stars.

Highly-regarded by the Packer family, he even ran Crown in Melbourne for a few years.

“A true gentleman of the television industry,” one well-placed source told TV Tonight, “‘Jonno’ is loved by everyone.”
