Seven’s Olympics coverage is off to a buoyant start, with the network scoring a mighty 46.3% share for Saturday night -as competition was only just getting underway.

There were 1.61m metro viewers watching the Opening Ceremony Live from 9am – 1:30pm on Saturday morning. The biggest audience was in Melbourne with 522,000 viewers followed by Sydney’s 447,000.

With regional viewers added, it lifts to 2.25m. A further 945,000 metro viewers watched the Opening Ceremony highlights.

That was down from London’s 2012 broadcast, but much has to be taken into consideration when comparing previous ceremonies including timezones and the complete overhaul of the television landscape, with all its extra content platforms.

Sydney 2000: 6.5m
Athens 2004: 3.03m
Beijing 2008: 3.3m
London 2012: 1.72m
Rio 2016: 1.61m

In primetime Saturday Day 1: Evening averaged 721,000 viewers and 555,000 for Day 1: Late Night.

Best multichannel figures were 7TWO’s Day 1: Evening (325,000) and 7mate Day 1: Evening (236,000). Those figures will likely climb given the relative early competition.

Even at this early stage the shares were huge: 28.1% for Seven, 9.7% for 7mate and 6.3% for 7TWO. Added with 7flix it amounted to a whopping 46.3% share.

Seven also claimed 592,000 social video views across YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
