Report: WIN in push for new Nine CEO

Rumblings at Board level within Nine, said to be linked to falling shares.

A media report today suggests WIN Corporation is looking to see Hugh Marks replaced as Nine CEO.

The Bruce Gordon controlled company owns 14.99% of Nine shares (plus another 4.9 per cent economic interest via an equity derivative contract), is said to be frustrated over falling share values.

The Australian reports WIN believes Nine could be run more efficiently and lamented the group’s shunning of US content.

WIN would only need the support of Perpetual, which owns 15.15 per cent of Nine, to mobilise enough votes to effect a board spill. But Perpetual is not expected to back the proposal at this stage, whilst other investors maintain that Nine’s programming schedule for the year was inherited by Marks and therefore say it is too early to judge his performance.

Nine’s share price has fallen by 36.2 per cent since Hugh Marks took the reins in November, following David Gyngell.

  1. There have been that many duds in Nine this year plus the sixty minutes debacle with the botched kidnapping attempt all under his watch ,no excuses plus terminating WIN televisions afflliate agreement was stupid saw the regional ratings yesterday and southern cross has given nine a smaller audience than WIN for nine programming . Even though southern cross has picked up in the number of viewers from when it was a ten affiliate it still can not pick up the same amount of viewers WIN tV had for nine’s programming .nine has less viewers for its programming now it’s affiliated with southern cross in regional Australia .Hugh Marks has been responsible for this debacle called nine .he should go .

    1. Yes, what were those ‘WIN will have to cut ad rates’, ‘WIN will have to close newsrooms’ screaming predictions? Pffft. “Southern Cross Austereo’s audience for Nine content is so far falling short of WIN’s share when it was the Nine affiliate”. (As reported ‘Illawarra Mercury’ 8/8).
WIN’s calculations show it closing the traditional gap between Nine and Ten programming and growing the audience for Ten shows by 14.7 per cent across the five states, while the Nine content’s 6pm-10.30pm audience share has declined by almost 21 per cent. “The results speak for themselves,” Mr Lancaster said in a statement. “We’ve closed the gap and done very well in the three key demos with our Ten programming beating Nine programming.” Mr Lancaster said WIN was “thrilled with our partnership with Network Ten”.

  2. Just not the Footy Show but NRL in general . It is its one geniune rating goldmine product (cricket pretty much out of rating season) and they have given such a leg up to fox sports by letting them show all games with own commentary – ratings are down and win mentioned this when affiliations changed

  3. WIN Sales and Programming want Nine to keep on doing what they’re doing, now that they are with TEN. WIN owner wants improvements at Nine and CEO gone.
Such dilemmas. More problematic than the Bermuda Triangle.

  4. Actually I’m surprised he hasn’t quit already! I suspect he inherited 90% of the shit that’s gone down this year. You would have to think it will take until the end of the year at least for him to put his stamp on things. He’s a good operator, just got thrown a hospital pass. I think Leckie as an advisor is good idea though.

  5. To be fair , I think most of those stinkers came out of last year’s Programming decisions, so it’s a bit early to knife Hugh in the time honoured tradition of TV. He inherited these programmes as shite as they might be.
Mind you , Hugh could do worse than call David Leckie and put him on a rolling 12 month deal to shake the place up.
And we all know he would. I’m sure advertisers and fund managers would appreciate having a red hot TV pro back in the game to restore confidence.
At least having given up drinking he will no longer be a danger to shipping.

  6. HM has steered the ship with some real stinkers… The embassy, the verdict, AGT, farmer wants a old wife, the Briefcase, Reno Rumble, Hotplate, Married at first sight, the Beirut saga… Some one has to take the wrap for some dreadful commissioning and programming decisions. Didn’t they spend 100 million on new shows this year? Not one hit yet…

      1. Um “The relationship show averaged a so-so 771,000 viewers across the five capital cities last night and was third in its timeslot.
That is well down on the nearly 1.2 million that watched last year’s first season.” News.com
