The New Zealand production of The Block will face protests this weekend during its open day.
Unite Union organiser Ben Peterson, told the NZ Herald, “We just think it’s a really strange situation where you have this housing crisis, and at the same time there is this primetime TV show that is all about basically property speculation – getting a house and doing it up and flicking it off and the winner is the one who makes the most money.
“All those thousands of people who will come and look at the house at the weekend but no one will actually have a chance to buy it,” he said. “The people who will buy it will be investors or from the upper end of town.”
The average price of a three-bedroom house in the uptown suburb of Meadowbank last month was $1,144,292.
“Money and resources can be found to build a house in a short amount of time for the purpose of getting ratings, but not to build state houses and not to fix up the damp houses that we have.”
The Block NZ is currently in its 5th season on TV3.
Production company Mediaworks had no comment.

Yes – didn’t mind their block as it was quicker and shorter than ours in terms of hours on TV in between reveals, etc.
Would love to see more international versions of our reality shows on TV other than [Insert country here]’s Got Talent and The Bachelor/ette. Quite enjoyed US version of Masterchef when it was last one.
Its too bad GO! didn’t stick with broadcasting The Block NZ beyond its first season. I quite enjoyed the Kiwi take.
Nine probably realised it showed up their version. Agree though these shows lose their appeal when they just go for the top end of the market.
