US actor Jack Riley, best known for Rugrats and The Bob Newhart Show, has died, aged 80.

He died on Friday in Los Angeles after succumbing to pneumonia and infection after a long illness.

Riley was the voice of Stu Pickles on Rugrats from 1991 to 2005, as the lovable goofball father who invented toys to please his son that would often malfunction.

On The Bob Newhart Show he played neurotic patient Elliot Carlin from 1972 – 1978.

His career began in television during the 1960s, with bit parts on shows including I Dream of Jeannie, The Flying Nun and MASH. Other TV credits include Diff’rent Strokes, Silver Spoons, St. Elsewhere, Fantasy Island, Hart to Hart, Love Sidney, Family Ties, Riptide, Alf, Married with Children, Friends and Seinfeld.

He became a favourite of director Mel Brooks, appearing in five of his films including High Anxiety, History of the World: Part I, To Be or Not to Be and Spaceballs.
