US actor Marvin Kaplan, best known for sitcom Alice and voice-work on Top Cat has died, aged 89.
He died from natural causes at home in California.
Kaplan played Henry Beesmeyer, a telephone lineman who complained about the cooking at Mel’s Diner on Alice from 1977 – 1985. He is one of the show’s most remembered supporting characters.
But his voice became familiar to generations thanks to his work on the cartoon series Top Cat from 1961-62 as Choo-Choo, the pink, turtleneck-clad cat. He also voiced characters on Garfield and Friends, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Johnny Bravo, and 2011’s The Garfield Show amongst others.
Other TV credits include Becker, Meet Millie, ER, On the Air, Cagney and Lacey, My Two Dads, The Fall Guy, MacGyver, CHiPs, Chopper One, Julia, Petticoat Junction, My Three Sons, Gomer Pyle USMC, McHale’s Navy, and Gidget.
Film credits included Adam’s Rib, Angels in the Outfield, The Nutty Professor, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Freaky Friday, Midnight Madness, and more.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Kaplan many years ago when we both appeared on the same episode of “The Joe Franklin Show.” I was lucky that a friend took a photo of the two of us standing together in the Green Room.
He was remarkably kind and unassuming, and had a warm smile that made everyone feel good. Rest in peace, you dear, funny man.
