TEN has now confirmed The Wrong Girl starring Jessica Marais will premiere on Wednesday, 28 September at 8.30pm.

Based on the book by Zoë Foster Blake, the series will take on Nine’s new Doctor Doctor series, which premieres two weeks earlier. A week later SBS will debut its miniseries Deep Water.

But the timeslot for the Playmaker Media series leverages off its established female-skewing Offspring audience, and will enjoy a Bachelorette lead-in.

Marais features as 29-year-old breakfast television producer Lily Woodward, described as a woman who wants a life rich in romance, a dynamic career and a happy family, but getting there is complicated.

The cast also features Craig McLachlan, Kerry Armstrong, Madeleine West, Hamish Blake, Doris Younane, Steve Vizard, Rob Collins, Ian Meadows, Hayley Magnus, Kevin Harrington, Leah Vandenberg, Christie Whelan Browne, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, David Woods and Cecelia Peters.

TEN’s Head of Drama, Rick Maier, said: “We’ve waited years to find the right vehicle for Jessica Marais, and it’s a great joy to welcome her to TEN.

“If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes on a morning breakfast show, then this is the show for you. The Wrong Girl is fresh, funny, romantic and – we hope – does justice to Zoë Foster Blake’s brilliant book.

Jessica Marais said: “I’m thrilled to bring the character of Lily Woodward to life. She is fun, confident, determined, quick to react and disarmingly charismatic. I hope audiences love her as much as I do.

“It has been a pleasure working with the exceptional cast and crew, and I’m incredibly proud to be involved in this fresh and exciting new drama.”

Zoë Foster Blake added: “Having your novel made into a TV show is one thing, but having the very best writers, cast and crew create that TV show, and for it to air on Network TEN, well, that’s another thing entirely. I can’t wait for Australia to see The Wrong Girl. It and Jessica Marais in particular are everything I hoped for: funny, heartfelt, relevant and authentic.”

  1. The book of the wrong girl was ok and it would be interesting to see how they adapt it to tv so I will give it a go but I find the trailer underwhelming.

9 fast tracking doctor doctor makes me wonder whether its any good? Normally networks don’t fast track Australian dramas and leave anything good to start of the ratings year so it seems strange. Whilst the trailer doesn’t look bad the way its put together looks like one of those movie trailers that shows the best lines of a movie and the actual movie itself is terrible. I also thought seeing the two actors from rush who now play previous love interests in doctor doctor a bit weird. I’m not sure if I will give this one a go. The mucking around lately of footy classifieds timeslot is putting me off nine at the moment like so many other programming decisions they have made in the past.
