US action drama The Last Ship has been renewed for a fifth season just weeks after TNT ordered a fourth season.

The series, which is in the midst of its third season, will now stay on air through to 2018 with each season to run for 10 episodes.

Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane co-created the series and have served as showrunners for the first three seasons. Moving forward, Kane will serve as the sole showrunner.

The Last Ship has taken viewers on an exciting ride through three truly thrilling seasons,” TNT executive vice president original programming Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. “We look forward to watching the cast and production team ratchet up the drama, action and suspense even more over the next two seasons through summer 2018.”

It screens in Australia on Stan.
