Andrew Denton looks set for a TV return, according to media reports, with an interview show being pitched to Nine.

According to The Australian Denton and former Nine CEO David Gyngell are pitching an interview show to Nine in a ‘multi-series agreement’ said to be similar to ABC’s popular Enough Rope format.

Denton, who last hosted the unsuccessful Randling in 2012, will host and produce with Gyngell’s involvement. The article notes there is no certainty the parties will reach agreement.

Denton is well-regarded by Nine even though his only shows produced there have been AFP and The Joy of Sets. But he has quietly been a consultant for Stan. Last month he addressed the National Press Club on the topic of assisted dying.

A new Enough Rope / Parkinson format would be a welcome addition to primetime. Recent formats attempted, The Observer Effect with Ellen Fanning and Room 101 with Paul McDermott have not fired on SBS. But Anh’s Brush with Fame proves a charming conversationalist can still strike a chord with viewers.

Nine declined to comment.
