Veteran US actor Hugh O’Brian, best known as TV sheriff Wyatt Earp, has died aged 91.

He died in his Beverly Hills home on Monday.

O’Brian played the title role in The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp from 1955 to 1961. It became a mainstay hit making him an “overnight” star.

He also reprised his iconic role of Earp in other projects: Alias Jesse James (1959), Guns of Paradise (1990), The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw (1991), and Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone (1994)

During his time on the series, he founded the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) in 1958 to establish a new generation of leaders in the volunteer and service fields. Over 470,000 people have since participated in its leadership programs.

“I believe every person is created as the steward of his or her own destiny with great power for a specific purpose: to share with others, through service, a reverence for life in a spirit of love,” O’Brian previously said of his vision for the foundation.

His film credits include John Wayne’s final film, 1976’s The Shootist, plus Twins, Come Fly With Me, Ten Little Indian Boys, Assassination in Rome, Strategy of Terror and Game of Death.
