Winners barely grinners as Nine takes Monday

Ratings: By the time final scenes aired Seven's melodrama was in front, but it wasn't enough to top Nine's early evening raid.

By the time the final scenes of Winners and Losers bowed out last night the Seven melodrama had moved to the top of the heap, but only because it was pushing 11pm.

The last ever episode rated better in its second hour, at 582,000 viewers, than its first 552,000. Seven did improve on its line-up from last Monday but it wasn’t enough to halt Nine’s raid earlier in the night.

The Block, ACA and Married at First Sight all won their timeslots, with the first two shows up on last Monday and the reality double dominating the demos.

Both Zumbo and Australian Survivor were also up slightly on last week, trailing ABC’s Australian Story.

Have You Been Paying Attention? rose for TEN and once again Seven News topped the night.

Nine network won the night with 27.8% then Seven 27.5%, ABC 20.3%, TEN 19.4% and SBS 5.1%.

Nine News (1.06m / 1.03m) led for Nine followed by The Block (921,000), A Current Affair (908,000), Married at First Sight (814,000) and Hot Seat (565,000). Footy Classified drew 219,000 in 3 cities. Amazing Medical Stories was 171,000 in 2 cities.

Seven News was #1 with 1.18m / 1.09m for Seven then Home and Away (741,000), Zumbo’s Just Desserts (681,000), The Chase (659,000 / 423,000) and Winners and Losers (582,000 / 552,000).

Australian Story (882,000), ABC News (856,000), 7:30 (803,000), Four Corners (733,000), Media Watch (637,000) and Q&A (526,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was 24 Hours in Emergency (210,000), SBS World News (160,000), Richard Hammond’s Jungle Quest (111,000) and Antonia Carluccio’s 6 Seasons (91,000).

Something called Wallykazam! on ABC2 topped multichannels with 260,000 viewers.

  1. I agree with those who are questioning why Bec wasn’t mentioned or seen in the final episode of Winners and Losers. As one of the four main original characters of the show,i thought there would have been some mention of her,or a cameo appearance at the end when the girls went back to their 15th high school reunion.Very strange. Is the actress who played Bec not working in the business anymore?

    1. Maybe the actor didn’t want to come back for it. Maybe she was unavailable, overseas or on another job/contract. There any number of reasons she may not have appeared. I agree it may get have been nice to mention her though.

  2. Geez, Zumbo still ahead of Survivor! Come on, Australia. I am interested what others think…Survivor hasn’t had a great total people audience, but it usually features in the demos (when shows like Zumbo does not)…is the demo performance enough for it to be renewed? Ratings don’t seem to be growing over time. And let’s not mention 7pm Sunday again…

    1. I had stopped watching the American one quite a few seasons back, but I’ve been watching and enjoying the Australian Survivor. I think they’ve done well with the casting and have I found each episode interesting enough to keep watching. I was so glad Kat finally got voted off, had been wanting that to happen since the first episode.

      1. I’m with you there re: Kat being gone. I found it hilarious when Des described Kat on the first episode as looking ‘like she belonged in the cafe latte set in Manly’

Andy is quite amusing with some of his comments. ‘Everyone else on this tribe is driving a Hyundai in their brains while I’m driving a Ferrari’. It will be interesting to see how long he lasts in this game. He seems to be the most popular contestant on the Tenplay Survivor Fan Favourite Leaderboard

        1. Andrew has a large proportion of votes in the fanfavourite. Not to give him disservice, but it seems unproportionally high.Regardless, he has some entertaining quotes lately. @glenncc I do agree episodes could be more tightly edited, but we do get to know more about contestants vs US version.

        2. Andy is coming across as a massive controlling w*nker.
Don’t like Craig and Phoebe but they are both crafty, smart cookies.
          Hope they both go far.
Am finding the host much more mellow now – he’s even cracking a smile these days.

          1. I really like Phoebe and Brooke, great characters and personality. I wish Des had stayed…..he instantly rumbled ‘cafe latte Kat’. I loved how Phoebe ditched her last night….well played

    2. I really enjoy Survivor too. Never watched the American version but like watching it because it’s a break from the Aussie reno and cooking shows. I loved MC and despite being a fan of Rachel Khoo on SBS it wasn’t enough of a draw card to continue another 8+ weeks of watching about cooking. I hope that Survivor is renewed too. Perhaps it’s the older viewers that increase the numbers of Zumbo and they aren’t as interested in a show about surviving on an island. Glad it is doing well in the demos 🙂 perhaps Mon and Tue night only would work for 10 as Sunday does get swamped by 7 & 9s offerings. There is something about Sunday night on 10 that is not working. The Great Aussie Spelling Bee also tanked in the earlier time slot of 6.30.

    3. I’ve been DVRing both. For mine, neither are edited tightly enough. Survivor seems dragged out for mine, should only be 60 mins an episode instead of the 70-100 we are getting.

  3. I thought it was weird how W&L never mentioned Bec at the reunion. Even if the actress didn’t want to come back, they could of at least mentioned that her character couldn’t make the reunion.

    1. Yes I agree. It was a shame they didn’t mention her at all. Or other characters like doug, Carla, Jonathan, Sam etc. But mostly I think Bec should have made a cameo appearance at least at the reunion or at Jenny’s place or even via Skype as she was an original member.

  4. Sadly I’ve lost interest in W&L two seasons ago when new characters are replacing original characters. The finale was OK but there were supposed to be 4 original girls and would have loved to see all 4 of them in the last scene.

    1. Yes, same here. Enjoyed W&L in the early seasons but it lost its way quite some time ago.
A pretty lacklustre finale last night – only just limped home.
This last season has had some pretty weak and lame storylines, especially involving Sophie’s character.
Have only watched as it is the last one ever.
Agree that Bec and some of the other main characters from earlier on in the series should have made an appearance or at least been mentioned.
Did Frances ever track down her weasel fake father and her lost money?

  5. Ha ha ha. Zumbo and Survivor smashed by a repeat (or should I say, slightly updated) Aus Story, which was also breathing down the neck of the block. Just goes to show that a good story is far more effective in attracting an audience than big budgets and gimmicks.

    1. Or it shows the amount of old people who watch the ABC as opposed to other networks. Some of those “gimmicks” (Married, Block and Aus Survivor) were top 3 in the 3 demos that are measured (16-39, 18-49, 25-55) and targeting the advertising-friendly younger demos (as opposed to the advertising unfriendly old people) is a very viable business plan and one that at least 9 and 10 are using and succeeding with.

      1. In that case it also shows that the commercial networks are having a massive amount of trouble reaching their “advertiser friendly younger audience”. Those demo figures are tiny compared to the overall numbers for the night. Seems like anything but a successful business model – spending the last decade not reacting to a fragmenting market while those younger viewers turn away in droves.

      2. “the advertising unfriendly old people”. Perhaps the more intelligent older viewers (seemingly anyone over 55) who are not so gullible as to rush out to every “sale”, or have to have the latest status symbol like exploding Samsung 7 phone when the one they already have performs perfectly. Please convey your views re “the advertising unfriendly old people” to the funeral insurance companies who infest every break in daytime. Another reason why “the advertising unfriendly old people” are switching off of daytime FTA, aside from it being mostly reruns of what ever was on last night.
