Westworld off to promising start

With a public holiday, over half the Westworld audience went for the 'US simulcast' screening at midday.

New US drama Westworld launched with a ‘US simulcast’ yesterday on Showcase, screening on a public holiday in some states.

OzTAM rankings indicate it was the best non-sports performer on Pay TV yesterday, averaging 69,000 for the midday broadcast and 58,000 for a primetime replay -a total of 127,000 viewers.

That puts it ahead of recent Showcase launches by The Night Of (45,000) and Vinyl (35,000) but not yet a Game of Thrones juggernaut (a record 396,000 for its Easter Monday simulcast).

Promisingly, Westworld has attracted strong reviews, sitting at 88% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

    1. Really? I’m actually starting to get a little annoyed that series premieres are showing their hand too much from the very start. I enjoyed the 1st episode, but would have preferred to ease into the “problems” at the very end of the debut episode, not at the beginning.

  1. I absolutely loved the premier episode of “Westworld” yesterday – it was terrific! Pleasingly, it captured very well the essence of the original feature film, but also adapted the story and production to 21st century expectations in a most accomplished way. Top marks to the producers.

    I particularly liked the shoot out sequence edited to an orchestration of, “Paint it Black” – exceptionally well done!

    A really good start to the series. I understand that the series is 10 eps long, which is really good. I much prefer short form series these days as there’s much less chance of the series becoming stale because of having to pad out the storyline to fit 22 eps or more. I’m really glad that this approach is catching on in Australia with short form series being produced like the excellent “A Place to Call Home” (a brilliant ep on Sunday night), “800 Words” and a raft of…
