Mal Meninga traces his family genealogy this week on Who Do You Think You Are?

Mal Meninga goes on a deeply personal quest to discover if he is descended from an indentured labourer – brought from the Pacific Islands to work in the Queensland cane fields – in a culture replete with racism, kidnapping and slavery. His search takes him to Tanna Island in Vanuatu. Back in Australia, Mal is confronted by the harsh conditions endured by Islanders working in the cane fields. Faced with deportation, the South Sea Islander community rallied to challenge the White Australia Policy. Most were unsuccessful, but Mal discovers why his own ancestor was granted an exemption.

  1. Nice show last night and Mal came across as a real nice fellow.

Showed the frustration with family research when it was revealed that his GGF was buried under a completely different name.

Would have been interested to see whether the marriage to the Irish lass was one of convenience or love. Well at least he can truly say he is part leprechaun.
