Big Bash bites back over ratings

TEN says its overall cricket coverage has averaged higher than Nine's this summer.

TEN has hit back at Nine’s claims over which is the better performer in the Cricket stakes this summer.

While Nine’s individual programs for Test Cricket averaged higher in the 5 City Metro, TEN pointed out that across the full Cricket coverage, it had a higher average.

Whether you include or exclude pre  /post-game coverage, TEN claimed the Big Bash League has the better average audience.

On Monday TEN even won the night thanks to its BBL coverage.

  1. BBL is just a hit a six fest for hyperactive sports fans. Generally, these audience ratings especially for a sporting event, would not likely be overly impressing executives in other larger populated countries like the USA even if if you increased the viewer numbers to match the population, but then again they would likely be paying their players more money

  2. I hope 9 or 7 never get their hands on BBL.
10 do a fantastic job which complements the massive crowds attending 7 nights each and every week in every state.
Apart from MCG block busters for the AFL ( ie 100,000+ GF) average game and overall gross attendance would be way ahead of any other sport in this country’s history.
I love Test Cricket but this is top notch entertainment

  3. Ah, a good old fashioned p***ing contest where both sides manipulate the data to suit their respective arguments.
I’ve found both forms rather disinteresting this summer, neither of the same standard in the past.
And, of course, this is a direct battle because Cricket Australia regularly schedules international and domestic BBL at the same time……. Sarcasm!

  4. I never thought I’d say this but I have hit a wall with the BBL and have lost interest when my team the Brisbane Heat aren’t playing where in previous years I haven’t. Im actually looking forward to the Aus Open Tennis starting next week just for some variety in my viewing.

  5. Being a cricket traditionalist I didn’t like BBL at first. Give me 5 days of a test any day but I am increasingly having a problem listening to the commentators on 9. Oh how I miss Ritchie! I really enjoy the BBL now especially Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh commentating. They make it interesting and fun.

  6. The figures for big bash whatever way you look at it are great but unfortunately a couple of problems – I think every night on the main channel is over load and ratings will slip when the oz open tennis starts I think . And it will be back to 12% share on Friday night when no big bash because the one day is on and sure enough come February ten will be back struggling because they will make the same mistake this year as in last few years and keep the project as an hour when should jump the opposition at 7 with celebrity etc. they also need more sustained sport . They should have got the satursday afternoon AFL game to rebuild the sports portfolio after trashing the motor sport brand

    1. That will be a press release on the morning of Monday Jan 30 “after the tennis” where Seven will declare tennis as Australia’s number 1 summer sport reach over 6 million Aussies via the 7tennis app and the “channels of Seven”…

  7. Nine wouldn’t have said anything if they didn’t feel the cricket thunder was being stolen from them. The BBL success is fantastic for TEN, but it is bittersweet, because it will just become all the more expensive with the next rights due soon. However, they know how vital it is to them, in ratings and as a launchpad for the year, so I am sure they’ll do all they can to keep it. (Also, I don’t work for TEN)

  8. The big difference between Nine’s and Ten’s Cricket coverage is that with the Tests and the National games, people are engaged, they know the players, they follow the 5 days and take the emotional journey with the team. With Big Bash it is merely hit and giggle – yes it is nice to watch but it it doesn’t mean anything. If you ask most punters on the streets of Australia i doubt they could name more than 2 players or even who their local big bash side is playing next.

After the next rights are negotiated this argument between 2 fleas about who owns the dog wont really matter much as Nine will own both the Tests and the Big Bash.

Like most things broadcast on channel Ten, it is fluff, they should just stick to crappy jungle big brother ripoffs and tacky dating shows.

    1. wow someone really hates TEN. Love them or hate them most comments i hear are extremely positive about TEN and their ability to broadcast this sport.
Let’s not get tired up with focusing on the network and let’s look at the presentation which by most educated accounts has been positive. (i am talking about sports writers who have written about in SMH, news.com.au etc.)

  9. I like the BBL cause there is an outcome and drama on and off the pitch. Tests are slow and sometimes simply boring to watch plus there may be no result at the end. I personally feel they could add a few extra teams particularly from regional areas and extend the competition. Perhaps have 2 groups who then go on to battle the top of the opposing group.
