Bizarre case of the copycat anecdote

Updated:Did Grant Denyer plagiarise a story from Matty Johns in a radio chat?

A radio chat anecdote Grant Denyer gave to Kyle & Jackie O is remarkably similar to one told by Triple M’s Matty Johns on The Grill Team.

The copycat anecdotes surround reminiscing about the old board game, Test Match.

Here’s what Johns had to say, and how Denyer recounted his version:

Matty Johns:
I tell you what I found in my cupboard — Test Match. I said, ‘Hey boys!’ They were out the front kicking a ball around. ‘In about 10 minutes, come in, I’ve got something for ya — it’ll change your life!’ So I layed out the mat … brought them in. And they looked at it. They said, ‘How’s this work?’ And I showed them the bowler and they said, ‘We’ll be playing the X-Box’.”

Grant Denyer:
Do you remember the game Test Match? Remember that was, like, a cricket game that came out? And you had little players you had to put everywhere. Then a little guy came along and you tipped his arm up and a little ball rolled down towards the batsman. We got that out not that long ago and put it in front of a 10-year-old kid, I said, ‘Mate, I just want to introduce you to the greatest boardgame that ever exists’. He walks out and he goes, ‘What’s this crap! This is the worst graphics of any computer game I’ve ever seen!’

“He has just totally stolen my story. Is that worse than burning the Australian flag?” Johns told TripleM listeners.

Despite being radio rivals, Sandilands told Johns, “Hi guys, we heard about the disaster with Grant Denyer. Stealing your story, Matty, and putting it on here as his own. I think it’s disgusting.

“And, you know what guys, he didn’t do the story justice, I thought his delivery was really poor.”

Or maybe he needed to survey 100 people for a good anecdote first?

Updated: TEN advises Denyer has not been banned from radio shows and will appear on both shows tomorrow.

  1. This is a set up by the grill team….. they will have him back again and make something of it for rating etc…
its all about getting the listeners attention… people.. don’t be fooled by this stupid prank!

  2. “He walks out and he goes, ‘What’s this crap! This is the worst graphics of any computer game I’ve ever seen!’”

A 10 year old can’t tell the difference between a board game and a computer game?!

    1. You would be surprised how many kids don’t have board games anymore, they only have the computer games these days. At Christmas a 6 years old was given a rather nice Snakes and Ladders game and he said “whats that for”

  3. What this story fails to mention is that Denyer had actually been on the Triple M show an hour before and heard the story being told to him. Then got in a car, drove to another studio to be interviewed on Kiss and repeated the story. This article makes it sound like it could be a coincidence.

    1. You haven’t repeated a funny line or story you have heard to others before? I had never heard it before so Grants version was all new to me because I don’t listen to TripleM. I feel its a bit over an over the top concern, especially the remark about the burning of the flag.

  4. Surely this is all tongue in cheek ?
“….Is that worse than burning the Australian flag?”
“…. we heard about the disaster…”
“…. resulted in a ban by both KIIS and TripleM hosts.”
    “…. I think it’s disgusting”
It all sounds a bit over the top.

  5. What disaster? What a lot of baloney. Grant said similiar so what. Is a person suppose to watched every show and hear every radio announcement and joke so they don’t sound the exact same? Get real. Sounds totally different to me. Grow up Johns…take your bat and ball and go home.
