Renewed: Inspect George Gently confirms final season

Season 8 will be the last for Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby as UK detectives.

UK detective drama Inspector George Gently has confirmed its eighth season will be its last.

Series eight will consist of two feature-length episodes set in the North East, titled Gently Liberated and Gently and the New Age.

Filming begins in the UK this week, with Martin Shaw as the DCI, Lee Ingleby as his sidekick Inspector Bacchus, and Lisa McGrillis playing Detective Sergeant Rachel Coles.

“It’s wonderful to be coming back to the show. We’re a very happy and close company, and working with such friends is a joy,” said Shaw.

“I’m excited at being able to bring the series to a proper finale, a farewell that befits such a popular series.”

  1. I’m looking forward to this but disappointed that there are only 2 episodes. The plot has been leading up to George’s retirement on medical grounds in a similar fashion to DI Thursday in “Endeavour”.
Next year, following standard practice, Martin Shaw will film a doco by travelling the world on trains/boats and visiting animal sanctuaries while Lee Ingleby will give up zoo-keeping and return as a DI in “Bacchus”.

  2. Love this series. What with Wallander, DCI Banks and this finishing, only Vera and Endeavour left of the feature length episode type series, plus the occasional Maigret, which I found surprisingly good.

    1. Yes, Maigret certainly is an eye opener with Rowan Atkinson in the role, his serious looks when interrogating suspects is a bit distracting. I wonder whether French TV get to see a dubbed version. I’m sure British crime drama will continue it’s a TV imperative.
