US actor, best known as Get Smart robot Hymie, has died.

US actor Dick Gautier, best known as Get Smart robot Hymie, has died aged 85.

He died quietly on Friday in California, his wife, psychologist Tess Thompson, posted in a brief Facebook announcement.

Gautier (pictured, right) played Hymie The Robot, in just 6 episodes of Get Smart, appearing as a KAOS operative before he switched to CONTROL, culminating as best man at the wedding of Maxwell Smart & Agent 99. He reprised the role in the 1989 telemovie Get Smart, Again!

Gautier played many roles, including cabaret singer, stand-up comic, character actor and caricaturist.

The handsome actor had a pivotal role in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway in a role based on Elvis Presley.

TV credits also included When Things Were Rotten, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Patty Duke Show, Charlie’s Angels, The Love Boat and Murder She Wrote plus voice work on Galtar and the Golden Lance, G.I. Joe, The Transformers, The New Yogi Bear Show and The Addams Family.

Film credits included Ensign Pulver, Divorce American Style, Fun With Dick And Jane, Billy Jack Goes To Washington.

He also had a second career as an artist, working as a book illustrator and writing The Creative Cartoonist in 1989.

  1. Yes,i would have thought he was in more than 6 episodes,it certainly seemed a lot more than that.He certainly left his mark on that show.RIP Dick Gautier

  2. Wow, only 6 episodes. It certainly felt like a lot more and I loved his character. Get Smart is still a show that I can get a chuckle out of, even though I grew up on it and seen it many times since.

    1. If you watch it on TV you can still get a laugh out of how badly it’s been butchered over the years to fit into an ever-decreasing “half-hour” timeslot…

      RIP, Hymie. Perhaps we have some mutual friends? Ethel the PBX-board? Francis the coffee machine? Bruce the elevator?
