Accountants take blame for almighty Oscars gaffe

Twice the envelopes, as Warren Beatty & Faye Dunaway given the wrong card.

Accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers have apologised for what is being described as the biggest blunder in Oscars history after La La Land was incorrectly announced as the winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the best picture trophy to the hit musical, before Moonlight was later revealed as the true winner.

“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” a statement read. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

“We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation,” the statement added.

Beatty and Dunaway were apparently given the envelope for Emma Stone’s best actress win that was announced just moments earlier. Yet actress Stone also said she was still holding the card in the press room at the time.

It has been reported there were two envelopes for presenters entering the stage from either side.
