Airdate: Weiner

Acclaimed doco follows Anthony Weiner’s campaign for Mayor of New York City and the sex scandal that engulfed it.

Critically-acclaimed Sundance film Weiner screens on SBS this Sunday.

The doco follows Anthony Weiner’s campaign for Mayor of New York City and the sex scandal that engulfed it.

After resigning from Congress amid a sexting scandal in 2011, Anthony Weiner returns in 2013 in an electoral campaign to become mayor of New York City. This fly-on-the-wall documentary, shot from inside the campaign, chronicles how these ambitions get derailed again, when a new scandal erupts. He is again accused of sexting, and his wife Huma Abedin (a top aide to Hilary Clinton) seems forgiving, but this time the public is less so.

Wry, intimate and sometimes cringe-worthy, this incisive documentary is directed by Elyse Steinberg and Weiner’s onetime chief of staff Josh Kreigman, and received its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize.

The critically acclaimed documentary also won the 2016 Critics’ Choice Award; 2016 Champs-Elysees Film Festival Prix du Jury; and 2017 US Cinema Eye Honors Awards, among other prestigious nominations.

Sunday, 5 February at 9.35pm on SBS.

  1. Watched this feature-length doco go out on SBS last night (Sun 5th Feb) and would very highly recommend – it works whether or not you are interested in the political aspects. It’s value lies more in the human interest side and how a few arguably very poor decisions can result in catastrophic personal (and political) consequences. It will likely be available for a while yet via SBS catch-up services.
