Take That talent show Let it Shine has copped criticism for omitting lyrics from Lady Gaga’s Born This Way which refer to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender identity.
‘So the BBC edited Born This Way for #letitshine so it didn’t mention any LGBT references. Surely that’s the whole message of the song?’ asked one confused viewer.
Dannii can’t have been happy with that.
The BBC series airs in Australia on UKTV.
What no criticism for the terrible singing?
Deleted lyrics in bold
My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir
“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”
She said, “‘Cause he made you perfect, babe”
“So hold your head up girl and you’ll go far,
Listen to me when I say”
I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby I was born this way
Don’t hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you’re set
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way (Born this way)
Oh there ain’t no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Oh there ain’t no other way
Baby I was born this way
Right track baby I was born this way
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Don’t be don’t be don’t be
Give yourself prudence
And love your friends
So we can rejoice your truth
In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth
A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (hey hey hey)
I love my life I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe, yah
I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Don’t hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you’re set
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Oh there ain’t no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Oh there ain’t no other way
Baby I was born this way
Right track, baby I was born this way
Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re Lebanese, you’re Orient
Whether life’s disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
‘Cause baby you were born this way
No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to be brave

The song was written specifically about LGBTIQ identity. Understandably the song needs to be cut down, but leaving out all references to LGBTIQ identity is insulting and leaves a lot to be desired.
Just to be clear, the criticism was not at you, I assumed it was the English press picking it up and being citical/controversial. Your story only mentions a reference to a confused viewer, maybe I shouldn’t assume so much.
Ok no worries. Metro link was in the footer.
A tad off-topic, but I find the lyrics cringe-inducing. Miss Germanotta has been blessed with quite the set of pipes, but her lyrical artistry leaves a lot to be desired (as catchy as some of her songs may be). Frankly, I feel that she was trying too hard to make an impression in an attempt to lead her second album with the “feel-good anthem of the decade” or whatever it was that she was aspiring to. I feel that she would have made a greater impact writing a song that did justice to the struggles of minority groups, instead of just pointing out the fact that they exist. Different strokes, I guess.
Slow news day
Music shows always cut songs down to far less than their original length. Ok, those words are key to the song, but they do have an openly gay host so it’s not like they are phobic of diversity
I’m fine with criticism over choice of stories, but need to do better than that ol’ chestnut. If it’s a slow news day, I’ll take the rest of the day off!
Another overdone phrase.
