Rolf Harris cleared of sexual assault charges

Plus former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes begins an appeal on his conviction in the High Court.

Disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris has been cleared of three sexual assault charges against three females dating back 30 years.

A UK jury took almost one week to clear him of three assaults, but was discharged from deliberating on a further four counts.

The 86-year-old faced seven counts of alleged indecent assault and one of alleged sexual assault against seven females, the youngest aged 12 and the oldest aged 42 at the time.

The jury found him not guilty of indecently assaulting a young autograph hunter when she met him outside a radio station with her mother at the end of the 1970s.

He was also cleared of groping a blind and disabled woman at a hospital in 1977, and of sexually assaulting a woman, 42, after the filming of a television show in 2004.

The prosecution asked for one week to decide whether to apply for a retrial on the four counts.

Meanwhile former Hey Dad! star and convicted paedophile Robert Hughes began an appeal in the High Court yesterday, with his barrister claiming a mistrial because admitted evidence was too different to show a pattern of behaviour.

Neither Hughes nor his wife were present in court. A decision is expected in coming weeks.

Hughes is currently behind bars until at least 2020.
