Stop Laughing, This is Serious: Feb 8

Tonight's episode of Stop Laughing, This is Serious looks at the fearless funny ladies of Australian comedy.

Tonight’s episode of Stop Laughing, This is Serious is titled “I said pet, I said pet, I said love” and looks at the fearless funny ladies of Australian comedy.

Thanks to an increasingly open society our funny gals eventually made themselves heard as a comic force to be reckoned with. No longer the silent muses of the 30s and 40s or the scantily clad beauties of the Benny Hill era, by the 1980s women were front and centre of Australian entertainment, offering audiences an exciting new voice. And sure enough, they were naughty, and outspoken and subversive. And terribly, terribly funny.

From Sue Ingleton and Noeline Brown to Wendy Harmer and Magda Szubanski… how did they pave the way for the next generation? We look at award-winning young stand-up comedians like Anne Edmonds, Zoë Coombs Marr and Felicity Ward; Hollywood superstars like Rebel Wilson, and online sensations such as Skit Box and SketchShe.

From Big Girl’s Blouse to The Big Gig, Fast Forward to Kath and Kim, The Comedy Company to The Katering Show, this episode examines women as side-kicks, as hosts, in the writers’ room, or on stage and screen, working in what was once a traditionally male domain.

9:10pm tonight on ABC.

  1. Re Denise Scott… I’d love to know whether ABC have an archive somewhere of footage from her appearances on Spicks and Specks that never made it to air. I always got the impression that there was perhaps more to her contributions than a) they had time for, b) was suitable for the timeslot, c) the censors would allow.
