Govt appoints new ABC Chairman

NBN director Justin Milne has now been confirmed as the newly-appointed ABC Chairman, following speculation he would succeed outgoing Chairman James Spigelman.

He has been appointed to a 5 year term from 1st April 2017, a role which carries a $167,000 remuneration.

In a statement issued by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield, he points to his experience across film, digital media, telecommunications and information technology sectors.

“After founding a small film production company in Adelaide, (Justin Milne) expanded the business in Sydney and has since developed an impressive breadth of experience in digital technology and communications,” the statement noted.

“Mr Milne’s deep understanding of traditional and digital media and the broad technology and software industry will be of great benefit to the ABC. His leadership and extensive governance experience will complement the predominantly business and financial management skills of the ABC Board.”

Milne was previously CEO of OzEmail and has been Chairman of MYOB Group and NetComm Wireless, and Non-Executive Director of NBN Co, Members Equity Bank and SMS Management and Consulting.

Media reports have pointed to Milne’s close friendship with PM Malcolm Turnbull and noted he will remain on the board of NBN. He is expected to reduce other commitments.

“We thank retiring chairman James Spigelman AC QC for his leadership of the ABC Board over the past five years. He has steered the ABC through substantial change helping to ensure our national broadcaster represents and serves the breadth of Australian communities,” the statement read.
