Phil Gould signs new deal with Nine

Veteran NRL commentator to share his views for Nine across TV, digital, social media, podcasts & vodcasts.

NRL commentator Phil “Gus” Gould has signed Nine a new deal with Nine to provide additional content across Wide World of Sports platforms.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “Gus holds a unique position in rugby league, having played, coached, administered and commentated – all at the highest levels. He is one of the most respected voices in the game and he sits at the heart of what we strive for every day – giving our audience the best seat in the house, through the eyes of legends.

“This new deal represents the future for Nine and Wide World of Sports, making great content and distributing it across all platforms. That’s what Gus will be doing through TV, digital, social media, podcasts and vodcasts.”

Nine’s Head of Sport Digital, Patrick Effeney, hailed the new deal, saying: “Rugby league fans will now have a one-stop shop for Gus. The WWOS website will carry Gus’s columns exclusively at least three times a week, along with his podcasts and vodcasts. Our audience wants to see, read and hear from authentic experts. They don’t get any more authentic or expert than Gus Gould.”

Nine’s Head of NRL, Ben Clark, said: “It’s business as usual for TV, with Gus central to our broadcasts across the NRL season, and of course the big ones – State of Origin and the Grand Final, which viewers can only see exclusively live and free on Nine.”

Phil Gould said: “I am absolutely thrilled with this new opportunity to expand my role with Channel Nine and interact with the real fans of rugby league through our various media platforms.

“The extended service Channel Nine will be providing to lovers of rugby league is very exciting indeed. I feel honoured and grateful to be part of such a wonderful team here at Channel Nine.”

Gould’s first column will appear this Sunday on wwos.nine.com.au with podcasts available here.

    1. I don’t have Foxtel, but every time I have seen the League Show on it, I am always impressed by it attitude towards covering the sport. Professional, inclusive of women, insightful, modern and all about the league.
Channel 9 and in particular Gus Gould on the hand!! I rarely watch any of their league shows, other than the FTA overage of the game and this is hard to swallow sometimes. Gus doesn’t like to say something once, he has to say it ad nauseam throughout the coverage and most likely says in again on his podcast. The other thing he bleats on about is the “softness” in the modern game. Does he realise that mothers are also watching and hearing – a sure fire recipe for turning away future league players if these old fashion views are to be brought back into the game.
