Prince Philip the focus of The Crown season 2

The soul of season two is about Prince Philip's complexity, says Crown creator.

Prince Philip, as portrayed by Matt Smith, will be getting a lot more screen time in Season 2 of The Crown, according to creator, Peter Morgan.

“I find him extraordinarily interesting – his childhood, again, you couldn’t make it up. The soul of season two is about his complexity,” he said at an event for the Royal Television Society.

On whether Prince Philip’s infamous affair will be dramatised in the next series, Morgan said: “This is a spoiler-free chat! We’re still in the cutting-room and making all sorts of changes…”

Season 2 will pick up where it left off, and encompass 1956 to 1964.

“It takes Claire Foy (Elizabeth) and Matt Smith to the outer edge of where we can take them, with their ages, if we took it any further we would have to think about recasting,” he continued. “There is no commitment of it going further at the moment, we’re just focusing on this season up until 1964.”

Morgan indicated he is thinking about a third season but didn’t confirm it had been renewed.

“I have done some preparatory work, I’d be happy to do it, but at the moment I’m swamped.”

The Crown
is rumoured to be returning to Netflix in November.

  1. Best thing on television last year. Matt Smith gave the standout performance to my mind. Incredibly nuanced and balancing the unlikable and charming. While I much prefer Peter Capaldi as the eponymous lead in Doctor Who, I have admired Matt Smith’s other work. I was lucky enough to see him on stage last year in London and found him extraordinary. Incredibly charismatic. I can understand why the makers insisted on casting him as Phillip.

  2. It’s the performances for me that kept me hooked, along with the history. I was worried that with Matt Smith I wouldn’t be able to shake the whole “Raggedy Man Doctor” but he did. The other thing I loved about this was it wasn’t just about the monarchy, the storyline with Churchill was amazing and Lithgow was another stand out performance.

    1. When I first saw John Lithgow was Churchill, I was cyncial, but it was a great performance. His scenes with Claire Foy, Harriet Walter and Stephen Dillane were subtle and nuanced; hard to pull off when playing a famous character like Winston Churchill.

      1. The episode with Walter, Dillane and Lithgow was amazing. I know at the moment there’s film being made about Churchill’s war years (Gary Oldman playing Churchill) but Netflix and Morgan should really consider making a series about Churchill with Lithgow, sort of piggy back on the success of The Crown.

  3. You don’t have to be a Royalist or an Anglophile to like this show the actors do a fine job and jingoism is kept to a minimum. Some people may be actually surprised that the young Elizabeth actually had a sex life until she was made Queen. Poor Philip.

  4. I wasn’t sure about this show but i reopened my netflix account, and was really blown away! So I will tune in for the next instalment but agree, to keep going just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
