Airdate: Garda: Down Under

Nine Perth will screen a doco series on Irish officers working for Western Australia Police.

Nine News Perth host Tim McMillan will present Garda: Down Under, a look at Irish officers working for Western Australia Police.

This appears to be a production produced for Irish broadcaster, RTE, last year.

The documentary series, premiering this Sunday at 5.30pm, tells how since 2005, 30 recruits from Garda, Ireland’s national police force, have packed up and headed for a warmer climate, leaving recession-hit Ireland behind for a new life in WA where there is a need for more officers.

For the first time, WA Police has opened its doors to allow unique and unhindered access for an exclusive look at how the ex-Garda officers operate Down Under.

A A/Inspector Andrew Maher said: “From the police beat in Ireland to the police beat in WA – what a great way to showcase the men and women who travelled from the other side of the world to take up their new policing duties. Diversity in our ranks adds to the quality of service we can provide to the community.”

In this six-part series, the Irish recruits are followed on and off duty as they settle into WA, far from home and extended family networks. From the urban sophistication of Perth to the remoteness of Kununurra, these police officers do everything from taking forensic evidence to acting as temporary paramedics.

Set against WA’s stunning backdrop of sunshine and beaches, Garda Down Under also shows how the sheer vastness and harsh landscape of our state can be one of the greatest hindrances to solving crime.

Sunday, April 23, at 5.30pm on Channel Nine Perth.
