Airdate: Strange Signals from Space

This doco delves into the enigmatic pulses from deep space that have so-far defied explanation.

If Stargazing made you curious about life in the universe, the documentary Strange Signals from Space may interest you this Sunday night on SBS.

For centuries, people have looked up at the night sky and wondered if humankind is alone. Probes have been sent to the furthest reaches of the solar system, and broadcast messages sent out into the depths of space, but in all those years there has been no response – until now.

In the last few years, a mysterious signal from space has shaken astronomy to its core. This is the story of a genuine scientific mystery; the recent discovery, confirmation and on-going attempts to understand the origin of Fast Radio Bursts, enigmatic pulses from deep space that have so-far defied explanation.

Theories for their origin range from colliding stars, to alien beacons created by an advanced civilisation. Taking this story as its spine, BBC’s Horizon will explore humankind’s quest to discover if those on planet earth are alone in the Universe and the attempts to decode messages from deep space. Horizon will tell the real-life story of humankind’s search for extra-terrestrial intelligence and what to do if they’re found.

It’s a quirky tale of the unexplained; strange signals from distant galaxies, mysterious objects in deep space, Russian billionaires, Paul McCartney and a microwave oven.

Sunday, 30 April at 10.45pm on SBS.
