Kevin Spacey to host Tony Awards

House of Cards star to tread the boards for Broadway's biggest night.

Didn’t see this comin’……

House of Cards star Kevin Spacey will host the 71st Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in June.

“I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction,” he said in a statement. “Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”

Of course Mr. Spacey is highly regarded in theatrical circles. In 1991, he won a Tony Award for Lost in Yonkers with subsequent nominations for The Iceman Cometh and A Moon for the Misbegotten. His additional stage credits include Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Hurlyburly, and Ghosts. He also served as the artistic director of the Old Vic from 2003 to 2015, during which time he appeared in such productions as Richard II, Inherit the Wind and Richard III.

Nominations for this year’s Tonys will be announced on May 2nd by Hamilton’s Christopher Jackson and She Loves Me’s Jane Krakowski.

The Tony Awards airs in Australia on Foxtel Arts.
