Logies 2017: Random Acts of Carpetness

Tidbits on 800 Words, The Kettering Incident, The Project, Upper Middle Bogan & more.

The Morning Show

It’s time once again for TV Tonight‘s annual spillage from the Logies Red Carpet.

Amid the frenzy of celebs dripping in bling and bow ties, and the fraction of time you have with them, here are the random chats I managed to exchange across the rope….

Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur from The Morning Show on their upcoming 10th Birthday:

“This is our biggest year since we launched there’s so much going on,” Lazza revealed.

“Larry’s going to get me a present aren’t you?” asked Kylie.

“Yes. We were walking past the Rolex and Louis Vutton (Crown foyer signs). But I’m thinking more like something from Room Service.”

“One of these Logie statues would be nice,” quipped Kylie.

The Family Law

Benjamin Law on series 2 of SBS comedy The Family Law

“Series 1 ended on an optimistic note, some parents work better apart. So they have settled on divorce and everything will be ok.

“But in Series 2 we ask ‘What divorce has ever gone smoothly?’ So it’s a reality check.

“And the Laws are expanding in S2, and that includes in-laws.

“S2 we get more into the deeper teen years so you will see a hint more of that. But we are starting to work on a third series at the moment…….. if The Family Law continues let’s just say that story will continue too.”

Erika Haynatz, Genevieve Morris and Paul Gleeson all appear in Season 2, due mid-year.

Destination Flavour

The Block

Scott Cam begins filming promos for The Block in Elsternwick today, with 5 old houses awaiting 2017 contestants.

“We’ve transported them into position and I think we’ve created a whole little streetscape, a portion of a suburb! They are 1920s weatherboard cottages, which is right up my alley. That’s where I cut my teeth in the early days.

“Of course they won’t be like 1920s cottages when they are finished. They will be outstanding.”

Luke Warm Sex

Please Like Me

Debra Lawrance on being nominated as Most Outstanding Supporting Actress for Please Like Me -which she went on to win.

“I worked with Victoria Haralabidou in a play and she is the most extraordinary actress, and of course Deborah Mailman always wins!

“I’m very flattered to be in the mix.”

Hayley McElhinney on Doctor Doctor:

“We start shooting in the middle of May. The scripts aren’t finalised yet but I’ve got a bit of a sense (of what’s coming up).”

Doctor Doctor

News Breakfast

Virginia Trioli and Michael Rowland on whether News Breakfast covers the Logies.

“Yes we do. We cover it the next morning because it’s a huge event. Then on Tuesday morning we have an early start with ANZAC Day,”said Michael.

“We’re anchoring the Dawn services around the country. Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and all the others. It’s a lovely morning,” Virginia added.

And on the name change from ABC News Breakfast?

“In truth it’s been News Breakfast for some time. The ABC bit was dropped some time ago. This just makes it formal.”

The Kettering Incident

Sacha Horler on Kettering Incident‘s mysterious ending.

“The next season is being written and we hope to give you some more answers.

“Getting inside Vicki Madden’s brain is a privilege and she writes some crazy, crazy stuff. But my favourite thing about the scripts is that she doesn’t talk down to the audience. She allows people to be confused.”

Writer Vicki Madden added:

“If you back to the beginning all the answers are in there.

“A lot of people who have gone back have said ‘Oh my God I get it!’

“I made a commitment to stick to being bold, and Foxtel did support it, because it was a really big thing to do. I’m really pleased with the end because it is bold and it makes people think.”

Cleverman

The Project

Waleed Aly on his editorials going viral:

“I don’t know if anybody knows what it’s about. Virality is something that the best social minds of our age need to study because I don’t think anybody’s got a grasp on it.

“But what I will say is it’s a mistake to aim for it. All you can do is approach is whatever issue is in front of you with as much as rigour and honesty as you can. And if people responds, they respond. If they don’t, they don’t. If you try to chase clicks there’s a danger you produce crap and I’m more interested in not producing crap. Internally I’ve made it very widely known within our office that you don’t judge the quality of your work by how many clicks you have. That’s a measure for something else.”

The X Factor

The Other Guy

Matt Okine on his upcoming comedy The Other Guy coming to Stan:

“It’s based on one of my stand up shows from a few years ago that won Director’s Choice award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and we have converted it into a 6 x 30 min TV series.

“The stand-up show is about a radio host who breaks up with his partner of 10 years when he finds out she’s been having an affair with his best friend. The stand-up show was more the lead-up to the event and the series is after, the rebuilding of life after a break-up.

“It’s similar to Master of None, Girls and Please Like Me. Hopefully it will be up there with them.

“We’ve done the sex and the arguments, and a pool scene in f***ing freezing temperatures that was supposed to be Sri Lanka.

“It’s my first foray into long-term scripted format.”

Studio 10

Denise Drysdale on longtime collaborator Ernie Sigley:

“He’s in good health, but his memory is a little bit bad.

“He started a lot of people’s careers…. (like) Mark Holden. I just finished reading his book and he talks about Ernie giving him a leg up.”

Wentworth

Deep Water

Director Shawn Seet on bringing Deep Water‘s historic crime cases into a contemporary setting.

“It was important to do that because it is still with us and to just put it in the past, I think, in a strange way would be to brush it under the table.”

Ben Oxenbould added:

“There was very minimal resolution back in the day. We were living in a time when resolution probably wasn’t going to be performed. Now obviously people are a lot more conscious (of that) which is great. So to present it in a contemporary format probably was the only way that was going to be successful.”

Sunrise‘s David Koch on that April Fool’s gag….

“It was fabulous. I loved it. The photo looked like me after a Port Adelaide loss. I retweeted it. It was fun.”

Nine News

Nine News‘ Livinia Nixon on whether Daryl Somers should be inducted into the Hall of Fame:

“I think so. I can’t think of anybody else off the top of my head of anyone who has given so many years of service to TV and crossed so many different mediums.”

Love Child

Eurovision Song Contest

Joel Creasey on preparing for Ukraine 2017:

“I’m a huge Eurovision fan but this year I am across all the songs and the acts. I know people are Julia fans and I don’t want to disappoint them.

“This year Italy’s great, Romania’s awesome… and Australia very good!”

House of Bond

Todd Sampson’s Body Hack

Todd Sampson on whether Body Hack would win Most Outstanding Factual / Documentary:

“If I could vote I would vote for Deep Water, it’s an important documentary. I’m happy for Body Hack but I would give it to Deep Water. And I think they will win.”

Carols by Candlelight

800 Words

Erik Thomson on what to expect in 800 Words‘ third season:

“We’re mid-way through series 3 so I came across from NZ today and back tomorrow.

“It carries on in an 800 Words-kind-of-fashion. There are elements of serial television with a few little twists here and there to keep it fresh. We’ve made 6 out of the first 8 and everything is looking really good.”

Wolf Creek

Creator / Director Greg McLean on Wolf Creek season two on Stan:

“It’s a completely different idea. Lucy’s character arc finished in the first season. Each time we do a Wolf Creek story we do something completely different.

“The first series was a revenge story for this young woman but this twists it on its head.

“We’re casting now and it’s a big cast, bigger than last time. But it’s a challenge getting everyone attached.”

Lateline

ABC’s Jeremy Fernandez on fronting Lateline:

“I love it. They’re brilliant people. I’ve got another week then Emma (Alberici) comes back.

“But there’s a lot going on, the Federal Budget, the French Election, a cyclone series –it’s been a busy time.”

Gardening Australia

Upper Middle Bogan

Upper Middle Bogan writer Robyn Butler on whether a new season will happen:

“We are back in the creative hothouse, which is the garden shed. We are desperate to do more Bogan but it’s very hard getting all our stupidly-talented, very in-demand cast together. So we can’t do it this year, so watch this space.”

TEN Eyewitness News

Angela Bishop on tips for a red carpet journo.

“Let the stars shine. Just give the stars something to play with so they can do their best. If they’re a comedian try to give them a question out of left field. Then they usually come up with something gold.

And on Kerri-Anne Kennerley being inducted in the Hall of Fame.

“So well deserved. She’s been a colleague of mine for quite a number of those years. She’s a astounding to work with, she’s blazed a trail, she knows live television like few others. And I love the fact that it’s a woman –only the third- let’s make it 10 in a row. And David I know you personally campaigned for this, I’m really excited that you did that, so you should take a lot of credit last year for Noni and I just think that’s amazing.”
