US actress Erin Moran, best known for Happy Days, has died.

US actress Erin Moran, best known for Happy Days, has died aged 56.

US authorities in Indiana found her body yesterday afternoon after getting a 911 call for “an unresponsive female.”

Moran was cast as Joanie Cunningham, the younger sister of Richie Cunningham, who was played by Ron Howard.

The show aired from 1974 to 1984. It was set in 1950s Milwaukee and proved to become a runaway hit.

Moran played the same character in the early 1980s in Joanie Loves Chachi, a short-lived spinoff with her co-star Scott Baio continuing his role as Chachi Arcola.

She made regular appearances on the series Daktari in the late ’60s and The Love Boat in the ’80s. She made guest appearances on TV shows such as The Waltons, My Three Sons and Gunsmoke.

“Such sad sad news. RIP Erin. I’ll always choose to remember you on our show making scenes better, getting laughs and lighting up tv screens,” said Ron Howard.

“OH Erin… now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth …Rest In It serenely now.. too soo,” said Henry Winkler.

“So incredibly sad to hear about Erin. A wonderful, sweet, caring, talented woman. I can’t really comprehend this right now.Very painful loss” -Don Most.

An autopsy is pending.

    Happy Days was my favourite show as a teenager and along with Fonzie, Joanie was my favourite character.
    So likeable, with a smile that could light up the whole room.
    Seems she had become a tortured soul in recent times and fallen on very hard times. Such a shame. Way too young.
    Especially loved Henry Winkler’s tribute to her.
