Why the Gogglebox cast deserve a pay rise

If there is any cast on TV that should be asking for a pay rise it's this one.

Ratings for LifeStyle’s Gogglebox continue to deliver above and beyond, last night drawing 197,000 viewers.

The highest figure this season was 215,000 nationally in Overnight numbers last month, and previous seasons have gone up to 242,000.

Compare that figure to some of the recent outings on Foxtel and you get a quick lesson in just what a hit this show is, especially given it’s frugal production costs.

Gogglebox 215,000
Selling Houses Australia
136,000
Wentworth 101,000
The Real Housewives of Sydney 94,000
The Walking Dead 83,000 + 70,000 (2 screenings)
Big Little Lies 69,000 + 65,000 (2 screenings)
The Flash 42,000
Feud 42,000

Even in Timeshifted viewing, Gogglebox is performing strongly.

Add to that the fact it is currently TEN’s highest-ranking show….. and you’ve got a cast who should probably be asking for a pay rise for their next contract.

Bump up their pay and give it to us every week of the TV year!

  1. I’ve always refused to watch Gogglebox, dismissing it as barrel scraping television. Last night I ended up watching it almost accidentally, ears pricking up when they watched Wentworth and I have to concede there was a shockingly good number of winning one liners and zingers and the reactions for E.T. were really nice. Not ready to watch it regularly but I’ll no longer p*ss on its’ parade.

    1. More than a few have switched sides after admitting the premise didn’t grab them. Did you see them blasting MKR over “slut” comments? It’s a good summary of our wider reactions really. Wouldn’t miss it.

  2. According to all the reports all of the people get paid. According (and yes I am now going on about the UK Gogglebox) they get paid 1500 pounds a month which is split between how many people are in that household. I would get it may be similiar here.

  3. One plus about this is that it isnt as bad as all the other reality shows that is on TV at the moment. Also the one plus (oooh a point I havent said before) is that the ads clearly dont make out things that happen in the show out to be bigger than what it is. My Kitchen Rules is a prime example of this.

      1. Prime example of this is on MKR is when they promoted the so called MSG scandal and when one of the couples did make there own I think it was curry for what is seemed as a ‘week’. Both cases it seemed to be not as a big deal as the ads were making it out to be. Gogglebox does not it show it for what it is

  4. I love this show too.But I think the idea of it playing for 40 weeks of the year would be too much.People would get tired of it if it ran that long.Probably having two series of 12 episodes a year would be a better idea.

  5. I heard they don’t get paid at all.

Having said that they probably get their Foxtel/electricity/other expenses paid for but not an actual income.

They do great but if they were getting paid you may find they would try to justify their reactions a little more and it may become more fake.

  6. I still dont get why people are harping on about how good this is. It is boring and unfunny compared to the UK one. Each of the groups are similiar to the people in the UK one. These people are boring dull unoriginal it puts me to sleep. The UK one is full of laughter and does not need to be edited to make it seem it funny.

  7. I wonder how they show is actually filmed? is there a crew? lights? what kind of cameras?

anyone know what happened to that hippie family they had for the first couple of seasons?

  8. I Love this show but, I think the production is a lot more complicated than it looks, for starters a lot of the families don’t even live together, would you go over to your parent’s house or friends house with Anastasia and Faye to watch tv every night? and be told what to watch every night.

  9. “Frugal production costs ” – I don’t believe so … this is a Shine Production so you can be sure Foxtel and TEN would pay through the nose for this.

  10. I thought it would make sense to segue right from Gogglebox to Common Sense (announced last year), but I guess that’s not happening. I hope the current dual channel airing can continue with Gogglebox UK, but seems to be Lifestyle only.

  11. Agree it should be on every week of the year – even if they use other people to give them a rest. I’m sure there’d be no shortage of people who’d like to do it – I know I’d love to!!
