ABC announces new VR initiatives

Two funds set-up for NSW screen practitioners, and those in other arts forms, in Virtual Reality.

Two new initiatives for Virtual Reality has been jointly announced by ABC and Create NSW, formerly Screen NSW.

A fund of $120,000 for NSW screen practitioners was announced by Create NSW CEO Michael Brealey at 360 Vision 2017, at Carriageworks.

Another $120,000 is available for practitioners across the arts, including performing arts, visual arts, museums, music, literature, to develop projects up to $20,000 each.

Michael Brealey, CEO of Create NSW, said: “360 Vision was incredibly successful last year, bringing together some of Australia’s most visionary creative thinkers from the screen and technology sectors. It’s thrilling to have forged ahead with a second event in 2017 and for Screen NSW to be taking the lead, in partnership with the ABC, Screen Australia, City of Sydney and AFTRS in this exciting new area of visual story telling.

“This year, the establishment of Create NSW also provides the opportunity for artists outside the screen industry to engage with VR opportunities and we are looking to identify and develop a number of projects over the coming year.”

David Anderson, Director of ABC TV, said: “As the independent source of Australian conversations, stories and culture, the ABC is proud to be partnering with Create NSW to provide opportunities for Australian content makers to experiment with the power and possibilities of virtual reality.”

The 2 day 360 Vision event which brought together some of the best Australian screen producers, screen and theatre directors, writers and artists.
