FOX Sports News merges into SKY News

FOX Sports News channel is to be produced by SKY News in a move that could herald greater changes by News Corp Australia.

FOX Sports News channel will move from its current Artarmon headquarters to Australian News Channel’s Macquarie Park facility and two sites in Melbourne, SKY News at Southbank and FOX Footy Channel in South Melbourne, within three months. SKY News Sports Editor Paul Gregg has been appointed ANC’s Sports Channel Manager.

FOX Sports News will continue to provide content for The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun and The Courier Mail, www.news.com.au and www.foxsports.com.au.

But the move, announced just 3 years after FOX Sports opened a new headquarters in Artarmon, will also result in redundancies.

Existing FOX Sports News staff will be given “first priority” in the move, while SKY News Sports staff will be “considered” for new roles.

FOX Sports CEO Patrick Delany said: “FOX Sports News is Australia’s only 24/7 sports news channel, powering News Corp’s national websites and the number one online destination news.com.au.

“ANC’s extensive news gathering capabilities and state of the art production facilities will enable it to deliver more up-to-the-minute live breaking news to sports fans than ever before.

“The strengthened FOX Sports News Channel will continue to provide video content for FOX Sports’ website, the FOX Sports App and social channels with both teams working closely together.”

Australian News Channel CEO Angelos Frangopoulos said: “Australian News Channel delivers more news and public affairs programming than 7, 9, 10, ABC and SBS combined. The addition of FOX Sports News to our operations will create a groundbreaking centralised national video hub which will service a range of 24 hour news channels across all platforms.

“Today’s announcement will see a further investment by ANC in live Australian content. We are a business built on quality journalism and we welcome FOX Sports News into the fold.”

But the merger of two entities, both owned by News Corp, fuels long-standing industry chatter that TEN News may be replaced by SKY News, either as content supplier or in full. So far TEN has declined to comment on speculation as it undergoes a major “transformation’ review of its business.

News Corp Australia CEO Michael Miller said: “News and sport are the two sides of journalism most Australians care passionately about and today’s announcement brings together the two teams with acknowledged excellence in live and breaking coverage in these core areas.

“This new operation reflects News Corp Australia’s determination to constantly improve the service it provides and excel in an ever more competitive media environment.

“In doing so, it increases the quality and quantity of video available that reaches the greatest number of Australians across our various brands and platforms.”​

SKY News Business will also temporarily move to SKY News Weather facilities as part of the changes, with rumours of more changes in store.

FOX Sports News remains on Channel 500.

  1. This seems to make sense – will be interesting then to see whether the sky sports report will then come from fox sports like the weather channel. Have always found the sky news sport interactive news is updated much quicker then fox sports and you can no longer use the red button on fox sports news on iq2

  2. So, Fox Sports & Sky News aren’t owned by Foxtel but rather News Corp.

    Yet are broadcast on Foxtel (which is half owned by Telstra & half owned by News Corp).

    No many CEOs.

    Rather confusing.
