Rolf Harris walks free after ‘not guilty’ verdict

UK jury is unable to reach a verdict on charges of indecent assault.

Disgraced Australian entertainer Rolf Harris has walked free from Southwark Crown Court in London after a jury of five men and seven women were unable to reach a verdict on four charges of indecent assault.

Harris, 87, is now free to return home after being cleared of indecently assaulting three teenage girls, the youngest of whom was 13, at public events between 1971 and 1983. He had denied the charges.

The case was itself a retrial after a previous jury also failed to reach verdicts. He will not be retried.

Outside court, Harris’ lawyer read out a statement: “Whilst I am pleased that this is finally over, I feel no sense of victory – just relief,” it said.

“I am 87 years old, my wife is in ill-health and we simply want to spend our remaining time together.”

Harris served less than three years of a five-year, nine-month sentence handed down in June 2014 for 12 other indecent assaults.

This jury was never told Harris had previous indecent assault convictions, only that he had been in jail for previous offences.
