TV personalities including Rhys Muldoon, Benita Collings, Jay Laga’aia and Kayne Tremills have thrown their weight behind a campaign to keep Children’s quotas on Australian TV.

Commercial television broadcasters have revealed in submissions to a parliamentary inquiry that they want their obligations to screen Australian children’s content abolished by the Government.

But calls to retain a long history in Australian Children’s Television are growing.

Former Play School host Benita Collings said, “Australian children deserve content made specially for them. It is so important that the diversity of Australian identity and our children’s experience is reflected back to them on screens. For our children to lose our unique identity on screen is to lose part of our culture.”

Producer Jo Werner said, “Australia is well known around the world for its incredible kid’s TV. Because of this children’s television content is one of the most lucrative international exports in the Australian television sector. Here in Australia, shows like Dance Academy and Ready For This have provided thousands of employment opportunities in the screen industry and most importantly have given Aussie kids the chance to see themselves reflected on their screens.”

The campaign has broad industry and community support, including from: Australian Children’s Television Foundation Australian Cinematographers Society Australian Council on Children and the Media Australian Directors Guild Australian Guild of Screen Composers Australian Screen Sound Guild Australian Teachers of Media Australian Writers Guild Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, and Screen Producers Australia.

  1. I am not sure where the Australian kids prefer Australian programming thing comes from.
I mean the biggest hits typically are Pokémon, Adventure Time, Avatar, Regular Show, Star Wars, My Little Pony, ect.
How many kids you seen around with a Prisoner Zero or Blinky Bill shirt?

Also it seems the biggest thing on ABC ME is Heartland if the Facebook page is any indication.

Although I totally agree that quotas shouldn’t be removed, because if it does, then so will local content. Because dirty secret, I reckon kids rather Ben 10 than local stuff.

Local content is just too generic and lacks a certain polish by comparison, just take a look at Prisoner Zero as prime example.
This can also be seen in the adult-animation Pacific Heat as well.
