Just quietly, ABC has been owning 8:30 slots this week….

Ratings: Third night in a row ABC claims 8:30 slot. Nine won Wednesday.

Amid all the distraction of commercial network calamities, something unusual has been happening this week… ABC has been winning the 8:30 timeslot.

For the third night in a row an ABC show has trumped its commercial rivals. On Monday it was Four Corners, on Tuesday David Stratton‘s cinema doco and last night the season final of The Weekly with Charlie Pickering.

The Weekly‘s 634,000 bettered Criminal Minds and This is Us -Nine had Footy Show in 3 cities.

To be fair, some shows are kicking off at annoying 8:40 timeslots (assuming they even start on time), and in one case their were split-schedules, but it’s hard to recall a similar trend.

Earlier MasterChef Australia‘s 889,000 won at 7:30pm over Border Security and Britain’s Got Talent. It also topped the demos.

Seven News and A Current Affair won their slots -the latter was particularly high last night, including with a story on TEN’s fate.

Nine network won Wednesday with 27.7% then Seven 26.5%, TEN 19.7%, ABC 19.0% and SBS 7.0%.

Seven News was #1 with 1.17m / 1.11m followed by Home and Away (778,000), Border Security (706,000), The Chase (674,000 / 414,000), The Force (636,000) and Criminal Minds (469,000 / 365,000).

Nine News (1.1m / 1.03m) was best for Nine then A Current Affair (910,000), Britain’s Got Talent (692,000) and Hot Seat (618,000 / 363,000). The Footy Show drew 236,000 in 3 cities. The Last Resort was 144,000 in 2 cities.

MasterChef Australia (889,000) led for TEN followed by The Project (635,000 / 467,000), TEN Eyewitness News (522,000), Family Feud (406,000) and This is Us (377,000). A Hawaii Five-0 repeat was just 127,000.

ABC News (814,000), The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (634,000), Anh’s Brush with Fame (595,000), 7:30 (562,000),  Ronny Chieng: International Student (469,000) and Adam Hills: The Last Leg (305,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Extreme Railway Journeys (264,000), Gypsy Kids: Our Secret World (209,000), SBS World News (158,000) and Fargo (130,000).

There’s ain’t no stopping Shaun the Sheep on multichannels at 254,000.

  1. What is that Black Chat picture from? It looks like an interesting show I would like to watch. Can’t find it in any of the program guides.

  2. Please tell me that Ronny Chieng is not just going to be bogans chundering and other assorted bodily functions being performed on screen. It’s getting boring. Is this the best we can do?

      1. I think the potential of the show is there, it’s just that the writers haven’t tapped into it yet. Ronny is very funny as a stand-up comedian. I’d like to see that level of humour in the show, rather than every scene being anchored around some sort of bodily function. I will stick with it – miracles may happen.

  3. Enjoyed The Weekly, one of the better ones, and the intermittently-used Adam Briggs was finally funny. Wouldn’t mind more Black Chat occasionally.

Fargo was weird last night, well, more weird than usual. Wasn’t sure whether the scenes in the mystical bowling alley were supposed to be occurring or were hallucinations brought on by hypothermia and blood-loss.

    1. I thought it was probably the best episode this season, mainly due to the pairing of Kitty and Julia. But I disagree about Briggs. I find him annoyingly awkward and tbh the bulk of his appearances this season have felt like tokenism to me. Was a nice idea having Tom in the hot seat, though.

      1. Well, that’s what I meant by “finally funny”. I think we actually agree about Briggs, especially with his previous appearances being awkward and feeling like tokenism. I did say “occasional” Black Chat.

  4. Its often obscured by the usual commercial bickering but it’s not unusual for the ABC to be sailing close to the front in prime time, particularly in the post-8:30 slot &/or in the later 1/2 of the week.

Oh, and go Shaun! – you don’t miss a trick or ever lose a beat 😉

  5. Odd, there was no mention of Hotch leaving the BAU whatsoever – in that case will there be some bizarre off-screen departure of Hotch the Wednesday after next?
