George R.R. Martin developing new series for HBO

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is developing a new series for HBO, Who Fears Death -although a deal is not yet completed.

HBO has optioned the science fiction and fantasy novel by author Nnedi Okorafor. The 2010 novel takes place in a fictionalised post-apocalyptic future version of Sudan. It revolves around Onyesonwu (Igbo for “who fears death”) who is an Ewu, the child of an Okeke woman who was raped by a Nuru man. When she reaches maturity, she uses her magical powers in a bid to defeat her sorcerer father Daib.

“My World Fantasy Award-winning novel Who Fears Death has been optioned by HBO and is now in early development as a TV series with George R. R. Martin as executive producer. Note: This did not happen overnight. It’s been nearly four years coming,” Okorafor wrote on Facebook.

Who Fears Death won the 2011 World Fantasy Award for best novel as well as the Carl Brandon Kindred Award in 2010 for outstanding work of speculative fiction dealing with race and ethnicity.

  1. I like the dystopian genre even though the production quality can be variable and plots can tend to become recycled, so I will be interested to see whether George R.R.Martin follows a similar story telling style to GoT or tries something original, which could be risky but producers will no doubt finance the show because of his legend status.
