Hugo Weaving joins US miniseries

Hugo Weaving has joined an upcoming Showtime miniseries, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Hugo Weaving has joined an upcoming Showtime miniseries, Patrick Melrose, expected to screen on Stan.

The drama featuring Benedict Cumberbatch is based on semi-autobiographical novels written by Edward St. Aubyn. Patrick Melrose skewers the upper class as it tracks the protagonist’s harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery.

Jennifer Jason Leigh and The Crown‘s Anna Madeley are also on board.

Weaving will play Melrose’s father who tacitly condones the behaviour of his son who becomes an outrageous playboy and struggles he endures to defy the damage of his own past.

The story will cover periods including the South of France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s and Britain in the early 2000s.

Screenwriter David Nicholls is set to adapt all five instalments, which will all be directed by Edward Berger (Deutschland 83).

  1. Truly, is there any other country in the world, beside GB, where someone could be born into the upper classes, become a novelist and actually be called Edward St Aubyn (and with a ‘y’ yet!)
And people think writers like Evelyn Waugh, Noel Coward and Simon Raven invented outlandish names for their characters; they just had to look in the telephone book!!!
