Marvel explains shorter run for The Defenders

"Look if you finish the eight and wish it was thirteen, good on us," says Marvel TV boss.

At Comic-Con Marvel Television chief Jeph Loeb was asked why The Defenders would have a shorter run of just 8 episodes rather than the 13 eps of the other series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist?

But he denied it had anything to do with the production expense saying it was all to do with what was suitable for the narrative:

“No it had nothing to do with cost, it was always eight [episodes]. It had to do with what was the best way to tell the story. Our feeling was it broke really nicely… when you have that many characters you want to be able to service them, but you also don’t want to overload the audience and you want to be able to tell a story that’s compelling and will go along. Look if you finish the eight and wish it was thirteen, good on us.”

He also confirmed they don’t yet have any plans for a second season.

The second seasons of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are now in production with a third season of Daredevil and a second of Iron Fist are headed into production in coming months.

Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones and Sigourney Weaver star in The Defenders premieres on Netflix on August 18th.

  1. This is what I like about streaming services doing shows it has to fit the narrative not an epiosde length or time frame. Take Amazon Prime and The Man High Castle it had episodes that went for 50 mins, 32 mins 40 mins and so on as it varied, so without ads the episode gets the time it needs to tell that part of the story, Stranger Things was similar. There isn’t that feeling when watching of gee they wrapped that up quick or wow this one seems to be dragging on, FX also did the same with Legion a nice tidy 8 episodes to get it to the point it needed to be.

  2. So glad they’re doing a second season of Jessica Jones. Out of all the Marvel TV series the first season was probably my favourite closely followed by the first season of Daredevil.
