Mixed reception for Common Sense

Ratings: New TEN / Foxtel series has some work to do to match Gogglebox. The Front Bar beats Footy Show again in Melbourne.

New observational series Common Sense has a lot to live up to if it hopes to match Gogglebox.

Last night the show debuted to 463,000 on TEN which is in the same ballpark as the untested Gogglebox premiere of 479,000 in 2015 -but the latter is now steaming past 700,000+ with Logie wins and a fervent audience.

Similarly Common Sense was well down on its counterpart on Foxtel the night before. On social media it is getting a mixed reception. Whilst some were laughing at the reactions to news, others questioned their work ethic. Time will tell if they can connect to the cast.

But it was better news for MasterChef which won its slot with the exit of Callan, at 917,000 viewers and topping the demos.

Other notable results from last night saw The Front Bar again beat The Footy Show in Melbourne at 189,000 vs 153,000.

Janet King was up on last week, but Cleverman and The Family Law are both struggling.

Seven network won Thursday with 27.2% then Nine 26.1%, TEN 20.8%, ABC 16.3% and SBS 9.6%.

Seven News was #1 for Seven with 1.02m / 962,000 then The Chase (674,000 / 433,000), Home and Away (664,000), Make you LOL (475,000 in 5 cities) and Movie: Captain America (304,000). The Front Bar was 206,000 in 3 cities.

Nine News (953,000 / 940,000) led for Nine followed by A Current Affair (803,000), RBT (601,000), Hot Seat (546,000 / 300,000) and The Footy Show (436,000).

MasterChef Australia (917,000) won for TEN then The Project (555,000 / 352,000), TEN Eyewitness News (499,000), Common Sense (463,000) and Family Feud (389,000). A Law & Order: SVU repeat was 229,000.

ABC News (781,000), Janet King (521,000), 7:30 (515,000), The Checkout (492,000) and Grand Designs (254,000) comprised ABC’s night. Cleverman was down to just 134,000.

On SBS it was Great British Railway Journeys (347,000), Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook Melbourne (205,000), Tour de France (187,000), SBS World News (142,000) and The Family Law (115,000).

Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom reigned over multichannels with 264,000 viewers.

  1. Cleverman made the same mistake as the second series of The Code. After a pretty good first episode it introduced a completely obscure subplot that totally confused anyone who’d given the series a second chance. In spite of that the ‘surprise’ ending was pretty good.

  2. I felt the show has merit but like others felt a little contrived in places. I would think it would be better if the conversation was happening whilst they were working. How many if us can just stop n chat in a work place???

  3. We didn’t indulge as we don’t watched Goggle Box either. You never know it may pick up in ratings like Goggle Box did. I missed my weekly fix of William Murdock and his crew of cops. Hope Murdock Mysteries returns soon.

  4. Didn’t mind Common Sense but it all felt a bit forced and rehearsed. Not as good as Gogglebox.
Most participants just don’t have the charm and charisma of the Goggleboxers.
The oldies from the retirement home were good though.
    Will keep watching for now.

  5. I was somewhat embarrassed by Common Sense, most of the cast seemed quite thick. The person I watched it with said ‘I hope they don’t show this program overseas as it makes us look like a bunch of idiots’ and I totally agree! We won’t be watching again.

  6. Common Sense felt rather rehearsed, discussing all different topics from different days whilst standing around in the exact same position and not doing any work. I was bored by the first ad break, stuck out the episode but don’t think I’ll watch it next week.

  7. Common sense just felt weird. Sitting in the back of a truck or some other set up talking about topics just didn’t work for me. At least with gogglebox they were sitting on a couch watching TV which was more realistic

  8. From a person who just can’t fathom what people see in Google Box I didn’t mind Common Sense (liked the oldies) but I thought the hairdressers looked pretty fake.
