Steven Moffat: “There is no backlash”

Outgoing Doctor Who showrunner says journos have it wrong, and the real story is broad acceptance of the casting of Jodie Whittaker.

Outgoing Doctor Who showrunner has rejected press stories that suggest a backlash about the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the next Time Lord.

Speaking at Comic-Con he said, “There has been so many press articles about a backlash among the Doctor Who fandom about casting a female Doctor.”

“There has been no backlash at all. The story of the moment is that the notionally conservative Doctor Who fandom has utterly embraced that change completely. Eighty-percent approval on social media, not that I check these things obsessively. So many people wanting to pretend there is a problem. There isn’t. It’s been incredibly progressive and enlightened and that’s what really happened. I wish every other journalist who is writing the alternative would shut the hell up.”

Peter Capaldi added, “I think Jodie is going to be amazing. I spoke to her the other day and she’s so full of excitement and passion about the show. It’s thrilling to know it’s in the hands of someone who cares for it deeply and is so excited about it. So she’s a great choice for it.”

    1. Well, don’t watch the show any more. Clearly these people, myself included, watched (note the use of past tense) the show but it’s far easier to simply dismiss anyone that has a disenting view with a glib comment, eh?

  1. The ratings will be up due to the publicity in the first few shows but after that they’ll know if they’ve made the right choice.

  2. I disagree, I’ve seen some dissension within my own friend circle but their arguments don’t reach very far and ignore the fertile history potential of the character. There is a backlash, but it’s small and sounds very ill-informed.

  3. There must be some concern or why else would Moffat bother to make supportive comments, the BBC will no doubt try to create some positive spin as any publicity is good for the show but they have made a PC minefield for themselves if ratings slide, they cant quickly return to having a male Dr Who without consequences.
