Sunshine and tears still to come on SBS

Rising star Wally Elnour nearly stole the show at an SBS mid-yr showcase, but media were soon fighting back tears.

Rising star, South Sudanese-born Wally Elnour (pictured second from left) rubbed shoulders with veteran Ray Martin and indigenous filmmaker Warwick Thornton at a mid-year showcase for SBS in Sydney, yesterday.

SBS managing director Michael Ebeid, Director of TV and Online Content, Marshall Heald, Head of Sport Ken Shipp & Drama exec Sue Masters were joined by network faces including Jenny Brockie, Marc Fennell, Janice Petersen, Andy Trieu, Jan Fran, Patrick Abboud, Mark Humphries & Laura Murphy-Oates at Beta Bar.

While the basketball skills and unaffected charms of Wally Elnour were entertaining, a hardened media were fighting back tears seeing the footage from upcoming reality series Look Me in the Eye.

The simple but confronting concept dares two estranged people to look each other in the eye, without conversation. Two participants, “Jenny” & “Daley” revealed profound moments during their participation in the series.

“I’ve been lucky enough over 52 years to do a few things I’ve been proud of,” said host Ray Martin, “and a few things I’m not so proud of, as we all have. But this will be one of the top 5 shows of this year, I promise you.

“Had this been on commercial (TV) we might have gotten tacky, gone too far.

“But (the producer) kept pulling back every time when it got a bit tacky.”

Martin explained while most followed the rules to remain silent for 5 minutes, others went as long as 12 minutes.

“It was remarkable seeing the people who hadn’t spoken from 2 years to 40 years.”

While Safe Harbour has been pushed back to 2018, controversial series Struggle Street will screen in coming months.

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of TV and Online Content, said upcoming 2017 titles offer powerful storytelling that challenges perceptions and celebrates diversity.

“Today, nearly half of all Australians are either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas, and 21 per cent of us speak a language other than English at home. We’re an increasingly diverse and culturally complex nation, and SBS’s role in helping Australians understand and appreciate difference has never been more important,” he said.

“This year SBS is continuing to tell stories of contemporary multicultural Australia and tackle issues in ways that inspire, challenge and bring the nation together. Our objective is to make a positive contribution towards a healthier and more united Australian society through incredible storytelling, and over the coming months local commissions that go to the heart of our Charter, including compelling documentary series Look Me In The Eye, new Australian drama in Sunshine and powerful Indigenous storytelling with NITV’s You Are Here collection, will be testament to that.

“We’re also looking forward to bringing the US Tennis Open back to Australians free-to-air, offering a stellar line up of world class drama from across the globe on TV and online via SBS On Demand, dishing up delicious new food series’ with some of Australia’s favourite foodie faces, as well as exploring global cultures for younger audiences on SBS VICELAND.

“There’s a lot more to come on SBS in 2017.”
