Airdate: Last Night of the Proms 2017

Choir, orchestra, pomp & ceremony... a grand British tradition screens on UKTV next month.

I’m sure there will be many expats (and even a few others) interested to see Last Night of the Proms 2017.

The grand British tradition will be fast-tracked to UKTV in early September.

Sakari Oramo leads the BBC Singers, BBC Symphony Chorus and BBC Symphony Orchestra in a rousing programme of world-class music making.

The world premiere of a BBC commission for Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski launches the festivities, which also include the London premiere of Lola Montez Does the Spider Dance by John Adams while Kodály’s Budavári Te Deum honours the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The programme weaves together many of the season’s musical strands, featuring performances of Sibelius’s Finlandia (in its rarely heard choral version) and Sargent’s An Impression on a Windy Day.

Swedish soprano Nina Stemme takes a starring role in the Last Night, performing works by Weill and Wagner before launching the evening’s traditional finale with the Last Night favourite, Rule, Britannia!. Other soloists include Lucy Crowe, Christine Rice, Ben Johnson and John Relyea.

Sunday September 10 at 1.00pm on UKTV.
