Coronation Street producer wants more diversity

UK soap acknowledges a lack of multiculturalism both on the show and behind the scenes needs addressing.

“In terms of reflecting diversity and showing black and Asian characters, yes, we absolutely need to do more of it,” producer Kate Oates told Radio Times.

“And we need more black and Asian writers, to bring out the truth of those voices. It’s important to keep the show strong and relevant, so that it’s running long after everyone’s forgotten who I am.”

The first Muslim family on Coronation Street was introduced as late as 2014, while scriptwriter Jonathan Harvey called for more diversity on the show last December.

Soap historian Andrew Mercado told TV Tonight,“If you compare it to EastEnders, which is set in a very multicultural part of London, and even Hollyoaks which is set in Chester, Corrie is definitely lacking in diversity and they are doing the right thing in addressing it.

“Multi-cultural differences can certainly throw a spanner into any romance and scriptwriters should welcome any opportunity to explore extra dilemmas!”

Coronation Street screens in Australia on UKTV.
