FOX Sports signs FIBA broadcast deal

FOX Sports nabs rights to FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers including the Boomers and Opals.

FOX Sports has secured rights to broadcast FIBA national team competitions featuring the Boomers and Opals.

FOX Sports will show both men’s and women’s tournaments, including Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019,  getting underway in November.

FOX Sports CEO Patrick Delany said: “Basketball in Australia is booming thanks to the success of Australia’s NBA stars, and our home-grown competitions, the NBL and WNBL, which will both be broadcast Live on FOX Sports.

“The Boomers and Opals are enjoying unprecedented success, and both teams are shaping up to be genuine medal contenders at the upcoming World Cups.

“The next couple of years are crucial for our national teams, as they prepare to take on the world’s best in a range of tournaments as part of FIBA’s new competition system, and FOX Sports will be the only place to follow their progress Live.

“This deal reaffirms FOX Sports’ commitment to providing a platform for Australian athletes and exposure for one of Australia’s most popular sports.”

FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member Patrick Baumann said: “We are thrilled to team up with FOX Sports in bringing the very best of national team basketball to fans right across Australia. The close followers of the Boomers and Opals now know there is one place where they can watch and follow the games of their favorite players and teams.”

Other competitions include the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, the FIBA Asia Cup and FIBA Women’s Asia Cup as well as the FIBA Continental Cups Qualifiers.

  1. This is not a big deal. FOX Sports had the rights to all but WNBL 9 Years ago. since then the NBL has been on 10, 9 and SBS the ABC deal for WNBL has come and gone and they have spend last 2 years with no tv partner. I am suspicious of this anouncment because Foxtel got 30 million of Government money to broadcast sports that FTA networks dont want. I remember Basketball Australia tried to sell the WNBL rights to a FTA network as a packaged deal which would have included the FIBA tournaments but nobody wanted it. can be speculated at how hard they actually tried but i would have thought it would have been good enough for SBS. Last year i watched selected NBL games via NBL TV App, it was great, that is the way to go for these sports especially.
