Miss Fisher film, prequel in development.

Producers chart a two-pronged approach to return detective extraordinaire to screen.

Plans for a feature film for Miss Fisher continue, and a prequel Miss Fisher’s First Murder Mysteries is in the pipeline.

Essie Davis and Nathan Page were in Melbourne several months ago to discuss the feature project.

Drew Grove from Every Cloud Productions told TV Tonight, “We are in fact in pre-development for the Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears feature. We are currently finalising finance and have hopes to shoot next year.”

The film will also have an international element but is yet to be finalised, along with any release date.

“Locations are yet to be finalised but filming will be most likely predominately based in Victoria and potentially other states within Australia,” he said.

A prequel series, Miss Fisher’s First Murder Mysteries, which would comprise new stories created separately from Kerrie Greenwood’s novels, could also repurpose the character whilst manoeuvring around the availability of in-demand star Essie Davis.

“A prequel is in the early stages of development and we have Kerry Greenwood’s full support,” said Grove.

  1. Better would have been a series of 13 eps in 2014 when all the cast were available. But the ABC decided to not to continue with their highest rating drama, just when it was generating OS sales, because they wanted to direct funding elsewhere and try to attract younger viewers. Now 3 years later they are trying to play catchup

    1. Yes and no. Overall ABC does want younger viewers. But everyone maintains it was Essie’s availability that precluded more immediate Miss Fisher. At present they are not involved in the film, remains to be seen if that will change.
