US to remake The Munsters (again)

This time The Munsters will try to stay true to themselves as they struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

In what sounds like another bad idea (hey, I’m happy to be proven wrong!), another remake of The Munsters is in development.

This time Seth Meyers is behind the project for NBC.

In the latest version the offbeat family will be determined to stay true to themselves struggles to fit in in hipster Brooklyn (dear God).

It’s not the first time a remake has been attempted. The Munsters Today ran from 1988 to 1991 and lasted for 72 episodes. In 2012, Bryan Fuller produced a pilot called Mockingbird Lane with Jerry O’Connell as Herman, Portia de Rossi as Lily, and Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. But after it aired as a Halloween special no further eps were ordered.

The original Munsters aired for two seasons and 70 episodes from 1964-1966 with the inimitable Fred Gwynne plus Yvonne De Carlo, Al Lewis, Beverly Owen (and later Pat Priest) and Butch Patrick.

Good luck improving on Fred Gwynne.

    1. Lethal Weapon wasn’t an original idea but the TV series is good fun, except for the over the top stunts.

La Femme Nikita then Nikita weren’t original ideas, but both are on my to be rewatched list.

Original is over rated. The only thing that matters is “good”.

  1. In modern day Brooklyn, who the hell would notice the family!?
At least ‘The Addams Family’ has been left alone since the very poor 3rd film of the 2000s.

  2. Brad Garrett might be a good Fred Gwynne replacement. But only if they were doing a close emulation. It’s possible they’ll take a leaf out of Bryan Fuller’s version, avoid the camp and go for complete originality.

  3. I wouldn’t think about watching an original Munsters episode, but I would tape the first episode of this if it was on TV so I reckon it is worth a shot.
